Old and new L15 heads Compatible?

This might be a bit a bit early to ask, but does anybody have insight on if the new L15 16-Valve head would bolt up to the old L15 block (replacing the current 12Valave configuration) easily?

I know you will need the special catalytic converters and possibly a custom exhaust. The ECU to control the good VTEC.

Also, the way the cooling flows around the block and head is different so it might involve some modification to make the coolant flow correctly.

The pistons are different on the new engine, I don't know how this will affect things.

Plus the crank is better on the new engine.

I am no expert, and I have only read the available information.

I would buy the whole kit and kaboodle though, the new block is stronger for boost. Besides, if you find the head and all that stuff, you probably found the block from the same person.

Your original head already has 16 valves. The 12-16 confusion is just the WAY Vtec works but physically there are always 16 valves but at certain engine speeds only 12 open fully.

I had to go back and check my reference material!

Right currently it runs a 12/16v configuartion. The new L15 runs full time 16v and apparently they are bigger as well.

Hmmm, different size crank There are a lot more changes than I antisipated. Sounds like the whole thing has been reworked.

Oh well, nice conceptual idea while it lasted

So much work though, I was hoping for compatible internals.

depending on how well the new L15 accepts mods or how strong the aftermarket is for it, it might be worth the full swap. it would be a much easier/cheaper swap than a K20. of course it is still much less power...

Not sure if anyone knows more about this but from the interior engine bay photos I've seen, the intake/airbox is in a totally different spot. It's kind of a ram air/cowl induction, with a duct on the driver's side attached to the hood, going to the intake which is much further back than the 07-08 USDM fit.
I was actually interested in seeing if this intake setup could be modified to fit the GD3, because it (GD8) seems like it's pulling cooling air from the cowl rather than in the fender/behind the radiator like the GD3 - so we could get a better performing intake that still looked factory (for the "clean" freaks)

^ You'd have to relocate the battery probably. it's probably is a lot more work than it's worth.

Where's the battery in the '09? Didn't pay attention to where it was in the pics I saw.

battery is located in front of the air box (intake) and to the right of the filter box.

The ports on the new L15 are supposed to flow 4% more... a little polishing on the older design port could yeald similar gains IMO... If we could find someone who make cams for the 12\16valves engine, i think we could make that engine rock!!

Sorry to bring up a dead thread but I was just wondering if anyone had tried putting the L15A7 head on to the L15A1? I really want to give it a try seeing as there is a wrecker selling second hand L15A7 engines for $200!!! all i'd need is the head and the ECU right? anything else? heck if they are that cheap I might buy two

I really want to put the sprintex supercharger on my GD3 but they are for the second gen engines I'm sure.

Be cheaper just to swap the whole engine and components from a wreck.
