Modified OEM Airbox

So my fiance went to hang out with one of her friend up in LA yesterday, so I had spare time and an extra airbox that I bought used. So what did I do? I busted out the dremel and cut it up. It sounds a lot nicer and added a tiny bit to the butt-dyno. It was mostly just for a fun experiment, but I'm pleased with it. I still have my stock airbox just incase I want to switch back.

i was thinking about doing this the other day. instead i just disconnected the rubber hose from the silencer on the right side (in the 2nd pic) and couldnt really feel or hear a difference. but this may be fun untill i get a new intake

Just saw a guys fit today where he just took the cover off the stock filter box and attached a cone filter to the tube that the cover used to feed into. Will post up a pic in a couple mins here.

all that does is make your intake suck in more hot air, reducing horsepower. more louder, yes. more faster, no.

I don't recall reading anywhere that he said it made the car faster, or that he wanted it to. My SRI sucks air from the same place, are you saying that it's not making any power?

it's the same concept as a SRI as Arisenfury said. There are advantages and disadvantages to SRI. you increase the volume of air while sacrificing cooler air.
one advantage is that warmer air usually means better fuel economy . this tank of gas will not be my best tank, though. i've been hitting the gas to hear that sound

You could probably get it a little louder, better flow if you cut out or find some way to block off the resonator on the inside of the air box. I was messing with my stock air box when I first got the car but I couldn't figure any good way to do it except duct tape lol.

yeah, i was looking at that too. it would be a lot of cutting. and then using a plate material to seal the box back up would be difficult to shape. it would almost make more sense to fabricate a whole new box at that point.
which i have considered... i have a left over used OEM air fitler that i could use for measuring.

great minds think alike

again, it was just a fun experiment...
and honestly, there is a little more butt dyno action on the top end.

isnt it that colder air means better fuel economy since it's denser than warmer air?

no, typically cooler denser air means more fuel, meaning more power. a lot of people with insight hybrids modify a 'warm' intake routing the intake piping near the header. they have seen nearly 100 MPG with this modification on their hybrid engines.

I've been playing around with this as well and ended up blocking off the resonator with a piece of plastic and then taping it in place with a bunch of metal foil tape. This tape works well because it's so sticky. I blocked off both the resonator that's on the tube that routs air into the box and also the little passage that's inside the bottom of the box. The but dyno tells me it works pretty well but it's hard to say since I went from a short ram to this setup. My next step is to cut off the part of the box that has the elbow that goes into the throttle body and replace it with a regular elbow as SHG Mike has already done.

check out the sticky on sid's short ram, the sound is super, and it does seem to help in the higher rev range. beautiful tone when you really open up the throttle. really cost effective too. installed one on mine with the AEM filter and love it.
