My rotex whines

Searching through the threads in this forum I see posts that state the rotrex SC in the KW kits should not whine. Mine has 8000 miles on it and over the last 1000 or so it has gotten progressively louder in all I can describe as a loud whine. Running fine just noisy as hell...

Please take a listen to the video and let me know what you think.

is it a low boost or high boost kit?

EDIT:

I read your sig. It may be a leak in the seal of the restricter allowing air to go through causing a wine or whistle.

I'm sure you checked the Rotrex oil reservoir right? Pop the intake elbow off and spin the turbine by hand. Check that the belt hasn't jumped partially on one of the pulleys or the ac line isn't rubbing the belt. The supplied clamp to keep it out of the way likes to snap. When I had the low boost kit there was a super annoying whistle from the air flow over the restricter insert but you would have noticed it from the beginning.

Unfortunately Rotrex does not offer any rebuilds on their units. There is this guy eBay My World - superchargerrebuild, from what I've read on other car forums people have been happy with his work on repairing these units. I have an extra that I plan to send off to him for the ceramic bearing + bigger wheel upgrade eventually.

OP have you got this problem found/fixed?

Nope, No fix yet but Skunk (who answers the phone and is next door to KW) has agreed there appears to be a problem with the SC. My shop guy sent them a video so we are thinking they are going to send us an RMA (fingers crossed) It's not quite a year old and it's a two year warranty.

They are one and the same... I had a similar issue, hope they take care of you. What does your "shop guy"/they think it is?

It's seems pretty obvious to us that the bearings in the SC are generating the noise. You have a noisy SC as well?

I'm on a good unit, I had a faulty one when I first bought it. You never ran it "dry" of rotrex oil did you? Original owner of the kit busted the rotrex filter under the trans/engine and ran his unit dry. The bearing is F'd on that one. Hope you get taken care of... the unit alone is just over 2G's. if they wont help you out give that guy a call that I posted the link. Also keep us updated on this thread ether way as there are quite a few of us running the rotrex and wee need to know our options when it comes time.

The system has never been low on traction oil, I always check the reservoir at fill ups and have been pretty paranoid about the hose/filter that runs under the car. I'm going to keep after them, hopefully I'll get it resolved without a big hassle.

Thanks for the link, I'll keep that for a last resort.

So whats the situation of your car while you wait? Just running the supercharger as is? Or is the car down until they get back to you? Just curious because your original post is almost 2 months old, should be a simple yes or no on replacement.

Rotrex doesn't warranty that way. Unless skunk wants to possibly give away a free unit, you have to send the unit in, it gets sent to Rotrex, rotrex determines if it is infact defective, then skunk/KW can give you a unit from their stock.

just giving you a heads up, so you dont expect them to just give you a unit right away.

That sounds like something PTE would do.

Which is a nice way to blame the customer for everything.

An interesting read for those of you who have the time:
Garrett Turbochargers and the Truth - Yellow Bullet Forums

Note: this has nothing to do with Rotrex/KW/S2 but it can be eye opening for end users to look at what goes on behind the scenes of "reputable" companies when it comes to matters of this sort.

Harry Hruska @ PTE is a complete scumbag.

He has cost people hundreds of thousands of dollars by letting end users from the street compact to the Pro Mod Dragsters perform his R&D for him at their expese while pointing the finger at Garrett/Honeywell and his customers for catastrophic failures and the resulting damage.

This was all brought to light by Garrett themselves, who have now been exonerated with the truth of cold hard numbers. See Harry lie blatantly, get called out and admit to it then disappear from the thread. Ignore David Hance's ramblings in there, as much as I respect the guy for what hes done for the sport

Never understood the Honda crowds obsession with PTE

I seriously doubt there is any giving away to be going on, I'm waiting for an RMA so the unit can be inspected. Not sure why it is taking so long. I hate to be the squeeky wheel, it shouldn't take a bunch of bitching to get the warranty process going.

I suspect it will be a month downtime once it's sent out which is frustrating since it is pretty obvious that there is an issue with the Rotrex unit.

Dudes been having to drive on an obviously messed up unit... They need to get their shit together and fix this for him or not. Its unrealistic to have the customer remove the item, send to skunk, send to Germany, then wait on their decision. This is the real world where we need to drive our cars. If skunk can sell the unit they should be able to replace one under the warranty on their decision or eat it, doesn't really matter to the customer!

I haven't been on these forums in ages. Its sad to see you are still dealing with this issue, I feel for you! Probably makes you wish you went with a shitty Chinese turbo kit, you probably would have gotten better reliability from it. Its ridiculous when a company wants to claim superiority with reliability, reputation, price premium and WARRANTY, only to leave the customer hi and dry when they have a problem.

Is there a way to check the fluid? At 110 dollars for a liter you would think it would last. Rotrex SX100 Traction Fluid (1 Liter

For about 20 or 30% more than the price of a replacement supercharger I can pick up a fairly decent old car to drive while waiting to see what Skunk and Rotrex decide to do... I'm going to spend more than that and sock away a few grand just in case.. So far no problems though.
