carryboy hood strut install
carryboy hood strut install
not a direct bolt on but fairly easy.i take NO responsibility if you drill a hole in some random part of your fit on accident
i may find a way to set the lower brackets further back as it sits a touch lower than factory.that'll be later as im not too bothered with where it sits.
first place the carryboy bracket againts the factory hood lift bracket, making sure the holes DO NOT line up with the factory hood mounting bolts.

then mark your holes with a sharpie(NOTE: my holes are too far forward. i wasnt paying attention when i started. your marks will be a bit further back)

next drill the marked areas out and atttatch the brackets with the supplied hardware. i put the strut mounting hole angeld towards the INSIDE of the engine bay.notice how the mounting hardware would have hit the factory hoood mounting bolts if you had not staggered them.

i chose to use an existing bolt to mount the lower brackets to reduce the amount of necessary modification. the 10mm bolt thats in the headlight. just undo and bolt the lower bracket on top of it using the same bolt. make it tight but dont go crazy.

on the driver's side you will need to remve a piece of garnish to mount the lower bracket. it has the small tabs holding it in. pull the center of the tab up and lift the garnish out. you can modify this later on if you choose to re-install it.

once the brackets are in you can install the struts making sure the piston side is on the bottom and the upper mount is towards the inside of the engine bay.

TADA! no more lifting that awfully heavy hood prop! i took mine out for the hell of it but you can leave it in if you choose.remember to us both hands and apply even pressure when lowering the hood to avoid possible damage. also these are no where near as stiff as my teins i put on the s2k so id feel safe using them on a carbon fiber hood.

My struts arrived a little while ago and they installed pretty easy thanks to the DIY by spider2k.

There was 1 lock washer missing but I used a shaker-less washer that I had and it works just fine. I had 4 extra nuts left over so if someone is short 4 nuts I found them.

Like spider2k said it would be nice if it held the hood open a little more. I don't see any way to move the bottom brackets back any (fuse box is in the way) but it looks like the hood brackets wouldn't be too hard to fabricate or modify by adding an extension piece to make it raise it more.
Either that or find a couple struts that are longer and use the brackets as they are. When the hood is closed the struts are only compressed about 1/2 way and are still just over 2.5" from being fully compressed.

Works fine the way it is and I like it. Maybe one day I'll replace the struts with some longer ones to make it open farther but for now it's just fine.
Thanks Jimmy101

Just in case you didn't know how to PM yet.
hey, any one of you happen to know the weight your struts are rated at? or maybe you have serial numbers on them that you can post?
or maybe anyone knows the weight of our hood? then i'll just calculate the needed force myself. any info is appresiated
waht i want is to put together DIY for those. got everything figured out except the force of the struts. i hate to pay 100$ (let alone 200$ msrp) for something that is waaaay cheaper. count for yourself - the strut 15$ ebay or 25$ tops autozone. brackets and fittings about 15 or so. look at mcmaster page 1138. again as i figure everything out and put it together i'll post a DIY so any help with strut ratings is greatly appreciated

so after reading this last friday, on saturday i got bored so i headed to my local auto wrecking yard and picked up some hood dampers off of like a mazda 626 or something. anyways, i just had to wash them with some soap and water then it pretty much bolted right in. here are the results:

the best part about this is it cost me TEN dollars!!! oh yeah notice how they open more than the other kits out there
edit:forgot to mention that i did not have to do any drilling, cutting or removal of anything

best pics i have of them:

If you cant find the bracket i used then just get a ball joint that screws in to the 10 mm headlight bolt
nope, the last time I went for the parts at a junk yard, they asked me what year, and I had no clue... and they were going to be closing in less than 10 minutes, it was a large place, I didn't want to bother with it for a bit.
I found the pieces to be from the Honda Civic DX Hatch back, it's the ball joint on the actual hatchback, I was given a price of 50$ for a set of two... at the junk yard, it wasn't in good condition, so I'm gonna check retail price at the honda dealership tomorrow, I want this so badly, but I am not paying 90$ or 50$ from a junkyard.
