08 Fit BBP That Needs Some Love
08 Fit BBP That Needs Some Love
I just bought an 08' Fit MT w/ about 108k mi on it from a used car dealer. Due to the car market right now, after driving my sister-in-law's 09' Fit w/ 225k mi I felt like it was a worthy endeavor to find a Fit. Since some many drivers have a wealth of knowledge here and these cars can last a long time when taken care of, I thought I'd ask what things I should get done so this car last as long as it should?
Background on the car:
- There were technically 3 owners including the dealer and the title is clean
- The first owner got the car serviced at the dealership 0-60k mi, the second just did oil changes it appears from 60k-100k mi, then they traded the car in at a dealer and the guy I bought it from bought it
from that dealer and did some work to it
- Here is a brief maintenance record found in the service book from the original owner (minus oil changes and tire rotations):
- at 13k mi added oil and fuel additives
- at 29k mi replaced the brake fluid, air filters, and P/S fluid exchange
- at 39k mi (2012) cleaned the throttle and replaced the air filter
- at 44k mi (2012) replaced the battery
- at 48k mi (2013) replaced the transmission fluid
- at 60k mi (2016) replaced the transmission fluid
Some problems I've incurred:
- The battery light came on when I test drove the car and the A/C wasn't working, I asked the guy about it cause everything else seemed structurally sound, and he said he had just replaced the battery and it takes time for the light to go away. Reluctant, I drove the car again and the battery light went off and the A/C was working. So I left the car running for awhile and the light didn't came back on again. After I bought the car, the light came on and one of the belts started squeaking shortly afterwards.
- I drove the car from Philly to Pittsburgh (6hrs drive) and the car rode really well and the A/C was ice cold, no problems with the battery light
- I took it to the dealer to diagnose the problem and they tested the battery and alternator, said everything was fine, no battery light and no squeaky belt
- Recently, the idle has been high when I start the car up, 1400 rpms and doesn't drop below 1,000 for about 3 minutes and I can feel the engine shake inside of the car during idle
- It rained a lot yesterday and the belt started squeaking again when I start driving forward and the battery light briefly came on again
- The clutch pedal squeaks when I release it as well with some clunky shifting at times and very smooth other times
- The LCD panel on the radio is faded (not sure if this is normal)
- Just found oil on the oil cap
Maintenance I've Done:
- My friend and I just replaced the oil, oil filter, coolant and thermostat, the car is cooling way more efficiently than when I first bought the car, the fans don't come on as frequently and often
Future Maintenance
- This weekend I am changing the spark plugs (OEM) and the manual transmission fluid
- In a week or two the water pump
- Shortly after, I'll do the brake fluid, clutch fluid, and power steering
Any advice on some of the problems I am having and anything else you would change, check out or do to make sure this car is running in tip top shape?
Thanks for your help!

You'll probably need a new clutch in the future, if bleeding the hydraulic clutch fluid doesn't help.
The LCD panels always fade.
No mention of a valve adjustment in the maintenance history. That might solve the rough running problem.
Something's wrong with the charging system, maybe just a loose belt, maybe more.

I'll try to do the clutch fluid soon to see if that fixes that squeaking and I'm definitely going to get the valves adjusted
I changed the spark plugs and the MTF yesterday and the MTF was yellow and smelled burnt but the spark plugs just had carbon build up so we ran some Sea Foam through the intake and I realized the PCV valve isn't working after I tested it. So I'll change that hopefully on Wednesday and if I'm lucky that will solve the idling problem
Thanks for your help!
