Maintenance for Coast to Coast Move

I bought my 2007 with 94,000 miles, 2 years ago. I had ALL the fluids replaced at that time. The car will have about 120,000 miles at the time it departs for the coast to coast drive to California. I have some questions, given that I am not one who throws parts away before it is time to do so.

Hoses: I think it would be a good idea to redo the radiator fluid AND replace the hoses since they are original.

Brakes: I will do another flush of the brake fluid and do a brake check.

Spark Plugs and Coil Packs: I plan on doing this one myself, but wanted to get your thoughts. I know I'm on borrowed time given that they are the original. I just hate to throw away perfectly good parts. I'm not sure many of us have gotten more than 140,000 miles on the coil packs anyway so I'm thinking I should do this.

Battery: I can only assume this is the original battery. I forgot to ask the original owner at the time, but it is a Yuasa battery. I think I should go to Costco and get a 51R.

Any other thoughts to make my trip uneventful? Bring duct tape for sure........

Valve adjustment, trans fluid? Make sure tires are in good shape.

You're doing far more than I would. I'd just make sure the oil life is > 20%, the tires and brakes and lights are all OK (and the tires at the right pressure, including the spare), the windshield washer is full, and there isn't any other maintenance overdue. I might also vacuum the interior and clean the insides of the windows and so forth, but that's more about my comfort in not spending all day in a proverbial pigsty.

Coolant should be perfectly fine after two years. Brake fluid should be perfectly good after two years. If the battery is working fine for you now, there's no reason to expect it to die while traveling down the highway, when it's being called upon to do less than it does in around-town driving. (You'll be going longer/further on average between times when you start the car.)

Driving across the country is driving about 3000 miles. If your car is good to go 3000 miles around your home, it's just as good to go 3000 miles to California.

Oh man, you're moving?! Congrats, but I'm also going to miss you (even though we just has one Fit meet here).

Where in Cali are you going? You should join TrueFitCrew on Facebook (if you are on facebook) and keep in touch. That seems to be the big Fit club now.

Regarding maintenance,

Valve adjustments
Check brake pads and rotors
Adjust emergency brake
Coolant flush
Check water pump
Check timing chain
Check CV boot
Replace serpentine belt
Oil change
Air filter change (also your cabin filter)

With the spark plugs and coil packs, that's a common problem in the GD's after 80k miles. The fact that you've gotten that far is pretty good. I would still change it out though since you already have so many miles on your oem ones.

With the battery replacement, get the interstate megatron 51R. Remove the plastic tray that holds your original battery and this thing just drops right in (perfect fit). Can't beat that!

For your trip, don't forget zipties. Also, if you are particular about your paint, you can use some painters tape to tape off your mirrors, front bumper and hood. It'll prevent rock chips and such. In addition, check your tire pressure so that you'll get good gas mileage.

Have fun! Post pictures!

I'd probably just change the plugs (just because they're due, for MPG reasons) and MAYBE bring a spare coil pack if you're nervous about it. Make sure your tires have decent tread and aren't getting old/dry.

Of course you should INSPECT everything... belts, hoses, etc. But if there's nothing to indicate they should be changed immediately like cracks, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If the battery checks out ok, there's no reason to think it will fail randomly.

Long highway miles aren't hard on the car. I know it seems like a long drive but it's not really. I've racked up 2,000 on one trip around the west before, and I didn't even go further east than Western Nevada
