Choosing a Fit

I'm on the east coast, my daughter is in CA at UC Berkeley. Her Scion just blew a head gasket (well, over a week ago) and I have been frantically searching for a car for her.
I considered a few different versions of the Prius, but catalytic converter theft in that area is telling me to not bother.
I think the Fit is the perfect car for her, so here's my questions.

Given a 2009-2013 model, is the automatic in that version better/worse/less reliable than the later CVT?
I stopped at a dealer and they told me that with rare exception the CVT is as reliable, but both require regular maintenance.
I am leaning towards a 2012-2013 as I dislike how CVTs feel but to be fair I did not drive a Fit CVT.

Any existing FAQs etc you would like to point me to, fire away!

I love driving my '09 Fit (MT) in Berkeley. I lived there for a few years and I can say the hills are no joke. My wife's CR-V (CVT) occasionally struggles to maintain speed on some of the city's steeper hills. I doubt a little CVT Fit would have much trouble, and I haven't heard much about them being unreliable.

Also, not to promote purchasing a Prius, but they busted the guys that were stealing all the catalytic converters and theft is way down.

I haven’t seen many horror stories about the Fit’s CVT, so no news seems like good news.

the CVT is WAY more fuel efficient than the five speed auto in the older fits. The traditional automatic is impressively inefficient, but reliable so long as maintained.

I don't want to steal the thread, but I'm curious what sort of efficiency people get with Fit CVTs? I have a 2010 A/T and my lifetime average is 38.1 mpg and I regularly get 42-43 mpg on highway trips. That's just barely lower (overall and highway) than what I used to get with my 2007 Toyota Yaris M/T except the Fit is way quieter (I added sound deadening), has a better ride, a stereo you can actually listen to (see quieter), and is quite a bit roomier inside for people and stuff.

To the OP, I think a Fit is a good car but just like any vehicle there are maintenance issues you have to keep up on. There are many posts here about that.
