painting taillights

has anybody taken apart the usdm taillights and painted the silver inside black? i was thinking of trying this, i think it would look good on the nhbp, or maybe just painting the outside with a smoked clear.

I purchased the tails today from JHPUsa and a spray can from PaintScratch.com. I will pick up the rest of the stuff from local auto parts stores. I should have everything by next Friday and then I will paint over the weekend.

I found this in the Sticky: LED tailights, install, convert, DIYs thread. This sounds like what you are looking for.

I was test fitting the taillights today and the left one cracked on both the housing and the lens. I don't know if I will be able to successfully separate it now.

that sucks so i guess they are not as easy as the headlights to take apart, did you heat them first in the oven or with a heat gun. im not sure if you read the thread on painting the headlights and how to seperate them. but yes those last tails you posted are what i want. i may just spray a smoked film on them, i dont know, i really would like an extra set of us oem ones to mess with first.

Heh. Sounds like a plan.

I must say that I am very disappointed with the quality of the housing material on these tails. I didn't force anything or try to do anything that should have crack this, but voila! It cracked anyway. Do you think this will cause a problem when heating them in the oven or taking them apart?
