I've asked this question on both XDA and Reddit before and haven't gotten an answer, so I'll try here.
I bought an imported 2017 Fit Hybrid a few months ago and have been loving it. I've moved to a new city and don't really know the streets very well so I have been using an A/C phone mount to use google maps on my phone but I have some issues with it.
My phone blocks one of the vents so I don't really feel the A/C and the screen is small so I can't really see certain things at a glance. I know google maps has audio cues but because of where I'm located, the directions aren't always accurate, so sometimes it will say "turn left on ...", when there's really no left turn or it may be a one way street in the opposite direction.
So, I've been looking into replacing the Gathers radio that came in the car with a head unit that supports Android Auto/Carplay. I'm looking at both chinese android head units and a used Sony XAV-AX6000 on ebay.
The chinese head unit I'm eyeing is the Teyes CC3 2K. What I like about it are:
1. Large 9" high resolution screen
2. Includes dash kit so it looks factory, has the harness and other accessories so it's plug and play
3. UI kind of looks good, even though it doesn't matter since I'll be in AA/Carplay most of the time.
Reasons I'm considering the Sony XAV-AX6000:
1. It's Sony, they are a well known brand compared to some lesser known chinese brand
2. Potentially better sound quality
3. Better support
Does anyone have any experience with the Teyes/similar chinese head unit or the Sony?
The used Sony head units are priced a little above the Teyes, so I'm trying to figure out which is the better deal.
My main reason for changing the head unit is Android Auto/Carplay, so the Sony technically is better but the screen quality is kind of a let down for me. Do you think 800x480 resolution is good enough?
Also, what kind of harness would I get for the Sony? I wouldn't want to splice my stock harness with the one that comes in the box. Since my car is the JDM version and lacks some of the USDM version features, I'm guessing I need a specific harness.
I tried to organize my thoughts and questions as best as possible. Any opinions are appreciated.
Howd you go on the headunit fella? In the same conflicted trap, intending to run amps for everything
I've decided to not buy any until I get some actually good advice from persons who have experience with both types of headunits.
Users on other forums have mixed reviews on the Teyes CC3, especially in regards to the microphone quality.
Persons that have used big brands such as Sony say it's fine especially if you're going to use amps and new speakers, etc.
Of course Sony and other big brands are expensive and if you want to retain steering wheel controls and other oem features you need a $100+ adapter, so the cost goes up quickly
Thanks for that update. Ive erred on the side of caution and gone with an alpine 660e ($650 nzd and wired Android auto). Supposedly can map in the steering controls, time will tell. Will reassess in a few years, but likely will set and forget this audio setup (components front and rear, 8" or 10" removable sub (have both to try), nice class d 4x120wrms amp hoping to hide in the dash above the glovebox. Used to run class a amps active in my subies but I had a lot more space to play with.
Yea I might just go with a used sony unit, there are a few for around 450 usd but I'll have to pay an arm and a leg for custom duties. Let me know if you're able to map steering controls easily on the alpine
I have recently installed a Chinese Head unit. Works great. No instructions..hahaha Installed a amped sub with a rear camera.. Love it. Used to have the stock GPS (09). Very outdated with the Y2K22 issues..
Kicked off the project, luckily lots of info on these forums and recommend watching a YouTube video to dismantle the dash.
Bit of a gap issue from the old unit. Also not sure how to feed thicker wires to the front door speakers, seemed harder than usual so hijacked the factory wires for now.
Lots of space for a class d amp and crossovers etc under the dash.
Nah just splicing into the current wires. Bit of an old hobbie I enjoyed making beer money throughout uni. Didn't want to stress about odd/mismatched pinouts and will have a crack at wiring up the swc too.

did you complete the install? any photos of the installed unit?
In a holding pattern before I find more time to finish (kids), rain to stop and to source a few more bits. Headunit with AA is nice from the old single din days.
To do:
Wire in aerial adaptor (square honda to universal cylinder)
Wire in steering wheel controls, picked up 3.5mm plug and should be simple, control 1 to tip, control 2 to ring, earth to last bit/sheath.
Wire in original reverse cam, saves running new camera Wire and great post by another on here. Just need 12v to 6v step down and read which wires to join for what specific view into an rca male plug and tap the reverse 12v line.
Wire in 4ga x2 for class d speakers and sub under rear seats removable. Sound deaden and install last 3 speakers. You'll need spacers if using big 6.5s, easy to cut from Plywood and better than the shelf plastic adaptors I think.
Also need to find surround to cover gap created from double din unit frustratingly. Heaps of space under dash for a smaller but still 100wx4 rms amp, class d is the go to
Also went down the rabbit hole of researching teyes and other comparable units. Feature rich but cost getting up there and wondered if I need youtube offline etc. And decided to stick with alpine and let that market mature a bit more have done off-brand installs in years gone by and couldn't get myself to like the sound signature. If I had a dsp or amps with digital inputs and their own dacs I'd consider it but trying to keep things simple (rca outs) and reuse gear i already have.
In order to properly feed new and better wiring through the door harness, I've had to remove the front doors to have a better angle to feed the wiring.

Thanks for that tip, another mate said to try a knitting needle and crc but that angle is mad eh! Was it hard remounting the door level etc?

I did the work by myself. You'll need something to hold the door about an inch under it. Lower the windows as you'll need the door frame to hold/maneuver the door. To reassemble was a snap as you'll see the paint outline. If you have another person to help, that will work. I can't remember if I had to disconnect the wiring harness connector from the inside of the car as it will be connected to the door still.
