What's under the leather wrap on the steering wheel?

I would like to take off the leather wrapping on the steering wheel and was wondering what was underneath. I'd like to replace it with a different steering wrap. I have the Sport and didn't know if there was anything to worry about because of the paddles.

not sure if it would affect the paddles, but maybe look for pics of base steering wheel? Probably would look like that, since base's are leather wrapped.

I've got a fit base, we should trade steering wheels (except for all those pesky buttons and wiring)

I feel strongly that the sport leather wheel is not a "wrap" over a base wheel per se, but actually a different rim component entirely that is delivered as one "prewrapped" piece. Could even be from a different supplier, although probably not; most steering wheels are metal with a plastic covering and the supplier can just design two versions, one for leather one for not. I have put leather wraps onto wheels before and they always end up coming out a lot thicker-diameter because you add ~1mm in thickness from the leather. Potentially extremely high-quality leather could be very thin, but given the cost I doubt it.

So I expect if you remove the leather you will sort of end up with a wheel that is actually a bit thinner than stock. Rewrapping the unique areas around the thumb grips will be hard but not impossible

But I know someone on this forum re-stiched their wheel with red threads - do a search and see what it comes up with. Should give you more info than I can
