Help! I need to replace the driver seat!

I love almost everything about this car, except the currently mediocre gas mileage (25-30mpg) and the DRIVER'S SEAT. Granted, I already have back/neck problems, but when driving this car my pain spikes. In my Subaru Impreza, the pain is 1 to 3 out of 10. In the fit, it often spikes to 8 or 9, to the point where it's dangerous for me to be driving because I'm so distracted and upset. I kept my 1993 subaru impreza with 200k miles on it because I currently can't drive the Fit.

I don't think the lack of legroom is an issue. I think the issue is lack of lumbar support, the damn headrest, and the fact the seat tilts forward ever so slightly. I replaced the headrest but it didn't help much. I've spent around $200 on various back supports with little to no luck.

I need to replace the seat on this car, or else I'll need to sell it. I don't want to sell it. I'm not sure if replacing the seat is even possible, since it's such a one-of-a-kind car, and the fact that the gas tank is under the seat. My dealer seems rather clueless.

If you can help me figure out how to replace the seat, I'll cry with happiness and bake you cookies.

My email is hotmamallama????@gmail.com (remove the questionmarks). Please email me if you can point me in a good direction! I'm in Buffalo NY, and I'll travel a few hours to a good place if I need to. If I get a new seat, I'd like to sit in it before I buy it, for obvious reasons.

Thanks!!!!

(crossposted a few places out of desperation)

try some older civic seats...I found them more comfy like the years 01-05 maybe the ones with the side seat airbags in them, maybe they can be fitted to the Fit and retain functions (I am most sure all but racing buckets will sit really high if converted)

I would hate for someone to take some of the safety features out of a car that is suffering from medical problems. I hope you can find a cusion/seat combo that works...but be safe.

good luck and sorry to hear that...
maybe even new civic seats (I just happen to think they were very uncomfortable, but maybe they would be perfect for you...I dunno)
And maybe those will retain side airbag and force deployment feedback, it could be more unsafe in an accident though...

Ummm...other than that Welcome to FitFreak and Congrats (I think) on the Fit!!!

For the lumbar, get a small cushion and place it behind your back. You can probably find them at the "Relax the Back" stores.

As for the seats tilting for you, that's actually BETTER for your back. Hard to believe but true. I was told to always adjust my seat so that that there's a slight downward tilt.

So start with the lumbar cushion, or even a rolled up sweatshirt and go from there.

The lack of choices for any other seat that would fit the Fit and provide more comfort has been heavily discussed, with no answers at all. The racing seats and seat rails that have been successfully swapped into the Fit probably would not solve your comfort issues.

My suggestion is to look in your phone book for a local Van customizing shop that specializes in seats. The "Flexsteel" brand of custom seats might have something that would work, but van and/or car customizers have a lot of custom seat manufacturers to pick from. Just an idea, but if it works, please let us know.

I had the same problem with an older CR-V. If you take your car to a good trim/upholstery shop they can add enough padding to your seat to make it work well at a reasonable cost. The shop I used added a thin layer of foam to make the seat softer and added some padding to the lower back area for lumbar support. You may have to check with more than one shop as some are more experienced with this than others. Good luck.
