Help with Seatcovers- DIY Airbag/Seatcover mod needed.

Hi Guys,

Like the subject says. I am looking for some of you guys who have taken aftermarket seatcovers (not the 900.00 Mugen ones) and cut/trimmed/himmed/modified etc. the covers so that they dont interfer with the seat airbags. How do you get the airbag covers off? Do you tuch yours into the airbag cavity and then replace the cap or do you make custom cut-outs? PICS helpful . . .

Thanks in advance

Tbird

covercraft

The covercraft covers do not need modification. The OTHER brand (hawain name SP? can't remember) probably won't either.

All custom-,and most general-fit seat covers already have cut-outs on the sides of the seat back covers. I use sheepskin covers bought at Costco that are universal-fit. The outside of the seat-back portion is open, with a Velcro closure at the bottom. They loosely fit around the port where the air bags emerge in a crash. Whatever you buy, even if the seat cover partly covers the air bag area, it does not matter. Air bags deploy explosively. Even if partly covered by the seat cover, the bag will function properly.

I have some seat covers (I'll snap some pics) that I have had fro a couple of years, they are universal bucket seat covers. The front "seat" side of them is heavy material, while the backs and side have a thinner elastic feel. There are no cut-outs, velcro etc of any kind. I was thinking about just putting them om, measuring for a cutout and then making the cut. I cut finish the edges with seam tape or hem them with a sewing machine. I could also just make the cut smaller than the airbag panel, pop the panel and tuck them in-- but I don't know how to take the panels off and dont want to cause the airbag to deploy or be damaged . . .

Thanks for your info . . .

I had seat covers in my Mini that addressed the problem by having a slit over the side airbag, and then there was velcro from one side of the slit to the other, so that the slit would stay shut with velcro, but would open under the force of the airbag without a problem. Seems like that would be easy enough to adapt other covers.
