bad smell soaked into seat: steam clean or detail?

I spilled some Muscle Milk onto the passenger seat and had to rush somewhere to get a towel to wipe it up. So it had a minute or so to soak into the seat... ugh. Now it's a day later and I can smell sour milk in the car.

Anyone have experience cleaning this kind of mess? I would rent a steam cleaner or pay for interior detailing, but don't know how much $$$ I am looking at.

if you have a shop vac i would liberally spray soapy water over it
(or InteriorCleaner by Griot's) and vac it out with your shopvac.

you will need to use quite a bit of product if you spilled a lot of
that milk onto the seat. repeat 4-5 times.

then let it air dry for a day or two. spray some fabreeze or odor
killing spray.

My suggestion would be to use the Bissell "Little Green Clean Machine"- it sprays shampoo into carpets/upholstery, and vacuums it back out at the same time. I'm not familiar with the product that you spilled, but any fat content will oxidize (turn rancid) and continue to smell bad for a very long time. So you will need a liquid shampoo especially made for upholstery to break down the fat/sugar content and wash it out of the cloth and padding underneath.

Home Depot for Shop Vacs- there is even a tiny, one gallon size wet-or-dry. Costco carries Bissell Little Green Clean Machines.

I would check with a professional rather than relying on duh intuhnet for this one.

My dad spilled milk in on the floor of his car a few years ago; we completely removed all of the carpets and padding, and hosed them down completely out in the yard and washed them with soap and water. That car still smelled like spoiled milk for the rest of its days.

You have to find a way to kill those bacteria or they will stay around forever.

I've spilled beer on my seats quite a few times and I recently bought the LITTLE GREEN steam cleaner! Works GREAT! Got the smell of beer out of my car and removed the stains a 100% you can get it at TARGET for like $69? something around that!
