Sound Deadining (those with subs)
Sound Deadining (those with subs)
How bad is the sound deadining material in the factory hatch?
I have these two 12" subs here i'm about to put in:

trying to figure out how much dynamat to order.

Well with my sport, if I turn my iPod to max and plug it into the AUX input, when I have the volume level on the stereo at around 12, I can hear the music outside of my car perfectly. When I turn it to 15, it sounds like I'm in the car at a volume level of 6-8. This car radiates any sound inside to the outside like crazy! As for vibrations, no idea, since I have no subs, but even with the stock stereo, the rear view mirror shakes like mad.
The rear hatch in a European Jazz is minimal. You just get a bit of white material on the back of the black trim panel. Because of the wiper and lock in the rear hatch, it is not easy to put a large piece of sound deadening material in. We ended up using many small pieces (6"x4") to cover as much as we could.
The rear quarter panels we could not even get to without taking out the whole trim panel that goes from the rear door to the tailgate! We are going to risk it and not deaden that part....
Al.

I find the rear vision mirror and side mirrors vibrating so much you can't use them more of a problem or it could be that my vision in just blurred from the cabin pressure.
Inside and outside layers of deadening in the doors and a bit in the hatch does the trick. As for hearing it outside the car, if you deaden properly it should be barely audiable outside the car. Deadening stops backwave distortion and significantly increases the volume in the car. Deadening is more effective than using amps with double the power. Why get half the sound you pay for by letting it all escape outside.
Just buy a bulk pack of Dynamat Xtreme to do the car. Don't forget Dynords for behind the midbase speakers.
