Bigger brakes for my 17" rims?

This past summer, I bought some new 17" rims. I love them, but my braking isn't as good anymore. My brakes are currently screeching a bit and need maintenance. Can I get better, stronger brakes for my car? I hear that if I go bigger, the new brakes may not fit into my 14" winter rims when I want to switch back. Can I get better pads?

What options do I have?

Better pads up front are pretty much your only option if you're switching between 14s and 17s. On my stock 14s, the stock brake rotors and calipers were already a pretty snug fit.
