Problem! Knocking on front passenger side shock
Hey all,
I'm having some serious issues here... I have a very annoying problem with the front right shock. I currently have BC racing coilovers and anytime i go over a slow bump there is a loud low thump. I've replaced the sway bar links with moog parts and i've tightened the top nut so much i'm afraid i might break it if i keep going.
i've suspecting one more possibility, the damper mounting bearing, has anyone had a thumping problem related to this piece?

Alright, so I took a closer look and took off the top rubber pad, seems I was missing the bolt ontop of the damper mounting bearing, the whole top is shattered, missing 3 bearing balls. Will post pics in a week when I'm back in town. Ive ordered replacements.
I put a 19mm bolt on the other side but it seems like I'm having problems with the top hat gap now. I've managed to take a hammer to the top hat and flatten it out to minimize the gap. But I still have a small gap. When I get the new bearings I'm going grind down that 19mm bolt to gain some more clearance.
So in a nut shell... CHECK IF YOU HAVE THAT BOLT IF YOU HAVE ANY KNOCKING ISSUES FIRST. Tightening the top bolt more will break the mounting bearing like I did.

there is a nut that holds the hat to the piston shaft per pict below. the hat has the bearing as the entire strut turns when your turn you steering wheel.
then the hat is held by another nut + large washer and bushing from the top of the tower area to hold onto the car.
this is my front strut with the swift springs, but the concept is the same for coilover struts. you must reuse the hat and properly torque it to the piston shaft before you place it back onto the car. hope this helps.

I had the problem with my BC's fixed it the next night. Also still had a clunking issue, when doing the 5 lug front I removed my endlinks completely and the clunking is gone. You will need adjustable/shortened endlinks not new oe spec ones to fix that clunk.

Solbrothers, you need to replace the damper mouting bearing:

And you need to purchase a m12 x 1.75 (xtra fine thread) bolt and somehow grind the thickness of it down in half.

alright peeps, i've installed the bearing mount damper and it worked. I got rid of the gap at the top but I still have to hammer down one side to make the top hat gap smaller. all in all the thump on the left side is GONE.
