when buying tires new, do you think its NEW?

When buying new car tires for your car, how "new" are they really? It's not something we all think about when we purchase a new tire from a major tire store because they are brand new. But how long have those "brand new" tires been sitting in the storage building? An investigation turns out that there are alot of brand new tires that have been sitting collecting dust for 6 years or more!! This can lead to a greater potential tire blow out usually by tread separation from a tire that has degraded internally over the years just piled up in some storage room waiting to be purchased.

saw this on SCP ...passing it forward to yall. i though this was interesting.

ABC News

I always buy "crrent" model tires that haven't been around more than a year or 2 .. I've known that for years. Specially big chains like Sears and Wal-mart. They order 60,000 tires a shot and sit on them till they sell.

stock tires are either 14" or 15". If you go to 16", you'll need new tires.

Tires stored in fairly cool storage out of sunlight have a pretty long shelf life; at least 10 years.
Always look for cracks in the rubber around the tread layer and bulges in the sidewall for refusal.
The date of manufacture is stamped in the sisewall in the week and year of manufacture. If the age is of concern consult that date and refuse those that are too old in your opinion.

And yes, as Kenchan says, the tread cracks and sidewall bulges are most important.

i wouldn't go just by the datecode. as mahout mentioned, look for
cracks at the base of the tread block and bubbles on the sidewall.

some tires (like my 06 LegacyWgn's factory tires) cracked at the tread
after only 2 seasons...

Sometimes clearance tires are pretty old, about 2 or 3 years old but in storage until they get to you.

Each tire on one sidewall has four digit number stamped on it, it might look like 3607 for the 36th week in 2007. Usually for a set of four tires the date is the same but there can be differences.

Most times tires are fairly new. Just be careful when you get a good price or a closeout on an old model.
