A friend who has been working with his cars for years suggested I change the oil to Synthetic at 1000km (600 miles) So I guess that would be right after the break-in period, but before the 15%. Any thoughts?

A gearhead friend told me that on his Acura TSX he gets 3 more MPG with synthetic Mobile One oil. I talked with my mechanics today about this. They suggested that if they owned the Fit, they'd do the same. My only question is this: do I wait for 5,000 miles or 15% left on the dashboard indicator? Regardless, this seems to be a no-brainer....

I wound up changing at 4100 miles, it was turnin' and burnin', what I call brown and dropping down the dipstick. Then again, I do short trips and it was pretty much time on the indicator anyway (under 30%).

Next oil change, mobil1 for sure. My civic would get another 2-3 mpg easy using 10w30 than conventional 5w30, and it would burn less. Just don't spill when doing a change, that stuff is hard as heck to scrub up.

I wouldn't switch before the 2nd change. I'm a firm believer in letting the engine completely bed in and wear the way it wants to before feeding it something that stops all that.

I guess that I'm just old school, because I ran a synthetic blend on my first 2 changes and went to a "full"synthetic(there is no such motor oil that is fully synthetic). Mobile One won me over with better mileage figures and it actually makes my car seem faster. I check my oil regularly, and the feel and smell is what I go by to tell me when it needs changing. Even when it smells gassy the oil has never felt as if it thinned out,and if anything it feels as if it thickens. I started using K&N filters 2 oil changes ago and am now at 60% at 19000 miles and have changed it at least 5 times and have never found any sign of metal or any other particles in the used but never dirty oil. I alternate between driving the hell out of it, and nurturing it. I figure that in the end it will all balance out to normal driving. No problems, so far, except that my tires look like they need to have been rotated a long time ago. The front ones tell the tale of spirited driving.

I find this interesting. I changed my oil at 3000, 6000, and just taken my Fit in for service with the dealer @ 9000 miles. I drove the car gently for the stated mileage of break-in and then some. The dealer applied a sticker on the windshield to change the oil again at 1200 miles. All of my changes I have used regular Castrol GTX 5w20 and Honda filters. Upon the first change, the indicator was like 35 to 40% and the oil was damn near black. I didn't have plans for Mobil 1 full synthetic (not extended life) until over 15k mileage.

In my service log book I have documented the mileage and stapled the receipts to the pages. They didn't mark anything in the log book but gave me a print out instead. They said everything was good with the car. I had told them I perform my own oil changes and they said that was fine.

Perhaps I should have read the manual thoroughly I hope I didn't jeapordize the rings or anything else for that matter.

I use Hamp Synergy oil filters. They're smaller than stock. Smaller filters are better.

May we know why??

Bigger filters have more capacity (oil and dirt!) and should also flow more, so they should be better huh?? :P

Smaller filters prevent the oil pressure from fluctuating. Baffled oil pans are also ideal to get. Especially if you do touge or road racing.

Smaller filters make oil pressure a little higher which I guess could lead to prevent fluctuation.

Until then, i'll be using standard size K&N filters with AMSoil 5w20... cheap insurance with those 10 000km maintenance intervals that still seems pretty long to me...

I changed mine at 3000 miles.
The dealer kept phoning advising me that the car was 7 months old and needed an oil change regardless of the mileage.
Which makes sense for the extreme temperatures we get here.
