Thinking of buying a 2008 5sp with 172k
Hey All,
I'm thinking of buying a 2008 5spd with 172k miles on it for $2000. I'm wondering how reliability is at this mileage? Years ago I owned an 07 and 08, but they were both new at that time. I'm a traveling musician, so it would be putting some miles on it for sure. What should I look for when I go to look at it?
Thanks in advance!
Joe

Welcome to the forums!
As with any car, it really depends on how well its been cared for by previous owners. Fits will run a long time, and 172k isn't much if it's been kept in good shape. They typically just need oil changes, occasional valve adjusts, and sometimes coil packs. The GD3 Fit often develops piston slap which sounds like a knocking at certain RPMs and engine temperatures. This isn't necessarily a problem, but can be unsettling. Check the spare tire well for signs of water intrusion, many of them have leaky roof seams (an easy repair).
If it's in good shape and a clean title, $2k is a good price.

Check compression, fuel pressure, condition of spark plugs, belts, EGR system, trouble codes, exhaust and intake systems, alignment, wheels, tires, brakes, tie rods, struts, shocks, and condition of cooling system such as thermostat and radiator cap being replaced within specified time and mileage.
That's for a start, once done, you can start addressing the rest of the car that is 12 yrs old and has these many miles (by an unknown driver, possibly abusive 18 yo wannabe ricer racer who doesn't know what lug nut wrench is but had a buddy install him coil overs, cold air intake, wrong size tires and wheels and messed up the ECU settings).
