Lightbulb Lets Make A Vtec Override!

YouTube - 1993 Civic Si D16Z6 (VTEC Button)

This is ALMOST what we all need... We need a button that will allow us to DISABLE our "vtec" so that going past 68mph on the freeway is possible while still saving gas! well... i am right...right?? lol i dont have a fit myself but i plan on getting one and i hear people say once vtec kicks in on the fwy gas mileage diminishes alot... Well someone should try to make a switch that allows you to temporarily disable vtec from kicking in while going like 80 or so, that way we can cruise the same speed with everyone else on the freeway and STILL save gas! What do you guys think?

I can understand why you would want to be able to switch the Vtec on and off, but man, its so much more fun when it comes into play. Luckily for me my boss pays for my petrol so i dont have to really worry about driving economically.

I dont' know much about Vtec, but I think the fit's i-VTEC considers throttle and not just the RPMs to how VTEC will be turned on.

Well considering i have the second smallest engine in the company, i think i can get away with murder and he wont even notice! And we do sometimes drive insane distances so its all good.
My favourite is coming onto a highway, waiting for everyone in front of me to get into the left lane and if you time it correctly, and check no one is behind you, you put it into 3rd, and floor it past everyone before they can even think about getting into the fast lane.

Fuel economy definately does drop off at higher speeds, but I don't think disabling vtech will change that. With vtech disabled, you have less HP, so you will need more throttle to hold a given speed. Maybe right at 68MPH, there would be some MPG gains, but at 80... all the fuel you are saving by not using that extra intake valve (and a tiny bit of lift and duration) will be used up by the extra throttle position... Honda's engineers are good... if there was nothing to gain from having vtech, they wouldn't have spent the money on it...

You might want to educate yourself about how VTEC works in your car before you start disabling it.

VTEC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you ask me, there are other engine mods you can do before hacking stuff up and "disabling" your VTEC. You can end up reducing the life of your engine.
