Gosh, another problem... Lights?

My tail lights and my parking lights wont come on.

My head lights are fine and my brake lights come on when I press the brakes...

WTF! This is all after I installed a headunit. I didn't have this much trouble in my G35.

I so wetawded

I would suggest that in the future you get a professional to install an HU. You're lucky you haven't done some serious damage to your electrical system.

Its not the cars fault that you went in and hacked up the harness to install a HU... Lemme guess, crimp connectors and electrical tape? Or did you do a classic "twist the wires together, and then tape over them" to install it?

Maybe you should get your G35 back and burn it down before you burn down a perfectly good FIT...

i kid, i kid... but seriously, if you don't know what you are doing (as evidenced by the lack of things working in your car now), you should have a professional go back in there, and fix it all up for you... you really CAN burn your car down, and i'm sure the insurance company isn't going to be too excited about paying for a new car because you didn't install a headunit properly...

hmm.... i like trying things myself so i can learn about my car. trial and error... after this, i bet that i will know more about the electrical system than you guys.

i know my a/c unit like the back of my hand now

other than that, the back of the stock headunit has 3 different connectors

1. the main harness
2. the antennae
3. ??? whats the 3rd one?

im pretty sure this is the cause of the problem. and i dont see a fuse for tail lights btw.

plus this car didnt come with an owner's manual.

I would never "trial and error" anything. With an "error", you set off the air bag...or worse...disable it. You could fry the computer in a car. You could fry the entire electrical system. Disable parts of it. I would suggest that you pick up a service manual that includes the entire electrical/electronic diagram of the vehicle. The owners manual never includes electrical diagrams. I've installed HUs in many cars and I've always done it right the first time because I used a service manual to plan it and to determine what wires need to be spliced/cut etc. The trial and error method is just plain stupid.

When I was a dealership mechanic (28 years ago), I would see this all the time. Customers installing a HU would mistake the dash light wire to the factory HU as a ground and connect the ground wire from the aftermarket HU ot it, blowing the dash/tail light fuse. Don't know if this your problem, but it's possible.

I'm going to get a service manual...

I try to learn things on my own. I want the experience of knowing what "not to do". I will know next time.

My Infiniti's dash was *** because the ac controls ran in with the head unit... I had to buy new ac controls and rewire it. I also had to re wire my headlights when I did my bmw conversion on my Maxima. I installed the headunit in my Buick Roadmaster I had too. This fit is a first... It's not like I have never done this before.

I just figured that I have enough experience to put in a basic head unit.

it's good that you wanna try and learn things on your own, but you really shouldn't apply that concept to doing things with your car. errors with your car can be very costly and can really mess a lot of things up. i like to learn new things too, so i try to get people to teach me when they've done the same things to their own cars already, and correctly. just my advice, and hopefully you can avoid problems in the future.
