first gear

I have a few questions about first gear.
1. Is there a lockout to prevent you from shifting into first from second until the car reaches a certain speed or rpm? If so what is that speed/rpm?
2. What rpm do you people with mt's shift from 1st to 2nd? I shift at around 3500-4000 depending on conditions, because i can only get it upto like 12 in first before getting into pretty high rpm's. (normally I shift, when trying to get good gas mileage, at 2700-3500, unless on the highway)
3. Will i be able to go faster in first or a a lower rpm after then engine breaks in?

thanks

1. you need to rev match to get back into 1st gear from 2nd unless
you're like below 5mph. i usually need to double clutch.

2. 1-2 shift...anywhere from 3k to 4.5k depends on traffic and also
if my car's already rolling or not. if rolling, i take it up to 4.5k smoothly
to keep the momentum going if the car behind is an AT and on my ass.

3. no change after breakin. even if you hit redline during break in
it's based more on how much torque you're trying to force out of the
motor. if you did a smooth and gradual rev up it doesn't really hurt
anything.

1) Yes, somewhere around 20mph before it will let you shift back into 1st.
2) I shift depending on the situation, I rarely look at my RPMs so I can't tell you for sure, I'd guess somewhere around 4000 unless the car isn't warmed up yet and in which case probably somewhere around 3000.
3) Faster, no. Lower RPM maybe, but it'd be so significantly minute that I doubt you'd tell. Only time the RPMs vary at idle is if your engine is warmed up or not.

Does anyone else think 1st gear is kinda (i really can't think of a word to describe that you have to shift quickly from 1 to 2 from a stop and it feels jerky) Lugging might be the word I'm looking for? Maybe I just shift badly from 1st to 2nd lol. IDk anyone with insight?

1st should only really be used to get you going, if I'm not purposely trying to accelerate faster, I'll use 1st to get myself phsyically moving and then put it right into 2nd, probably no more than 2000rpm.

From what I have observed compared to other cars i have driven the Fit has a short 1st and a tall 2nd (relatively speaking based on how the car performs) I have found it much easier in other cars for that shift. Its not a deficiency in the Fit but more of a personal adjustment period. I just cant stand the random second gear "crunch" on this car. (not mesh, but linkage based)

When shifting for good gas I try to shift to second at around 2300-2800 but I shift through the gears quickly while skip shifting. like 1-2-3-5, or
1-2-4-5 or if traffic permits 1-3-5. If on a hill (downfacing) I will probably go 2-4-5. But lately I have been hauling more A$$ to get used to the dynamics of the car, since I dont get a chance to drive it often.

Usually 1st gear lockout is at about 5mph. but it will feel sooner or later if you are decelerating at varying intensities.
If you dont want to try and rev match or double declutch you can just clutch in and jam that punk in at a slightly higher speed, dont shove it straight in, tap it once or twice and it will go in, but put you right foot in or you will be in a world of hurt.

oh in a parking lot or in stop and go sometimes I go into second just a split second after 1st at about 2000 or lower if I am just rolling or in neutral.

idk...I think that would hurt without significant matching with mr. right foot and double declutching.

I think its more like 5... could be diff on yours but....scary if it lets you just do that on a whim. with a bit of

Yeah its around like 5 on mine, which kinda makes me upset. thats really slow and if you stay in gear till you can downshift into first, you are in like stalling range, and your car start to make "I'm about to stall!" noises.

The Fit will not stall if left in first gear on relatively level ground.

yeah i get that "lugging" feel on mine.

like when im about to shift to second, i push the clutch down and it feels like its ripping out of first to get into second gear.
im not the only one who has experienced that feeling in my car either, so i know its my me. i tested it out with 3 other people, and randomly they all felt the same feel.

its kinda weird. it has actually caused me to grind my second gear a couple of times because of this "lugging" feel.

i had that same feeling, like the shifter's being kicked out of 1st. i recently just started holding in the clutch for a fraction of a second longer before pulling from 1st to second, and that feeling went away.

for a long time it seemed like ten was the limit for me to go back into first. it always made sense because that's the line where the speedo starts to count by fives (it goes 0-10-15-20-25 in terms of the little dashes). i've had the car for a little more than a year now though, and i can get it to go back into first around 15 now. i don't though, it hurts.

Very well could be... I haven't tried in a while, I seem to remember it being pretty high but usually I just keep the clutch in until the speed drops down a bit more otherwise I'd have to rev match. I'll try it tomorrow.

First gear lugs for me as well, but it's not as bad now that I have upgrade my intake.

And yes my car doesn't like letting me back into first unless I'm hardly moving.

I shift at around 2500rpm for most of the time on flat roads. 3000rpm-4000rpm while the car is going uphill and start with 2nd when I am going downhill or the car is moving at 10mph+. It saves me gas when I go steady 2500rpm shifting, 1-2mpg more.

Tried it out this morning on the way to the gym, car wasn't warmed up yet so idk if that factors into anything but the gate opens at 10mph to go back into 1st gear.

I follow the advice of the folks at Honda: shift into second at or around 15mph.

It's in the manual.

Maybe you're not doing it right? First gear shouldn't lug... a bit herky-jerky is fine, but not lugging.
