over 40 mpg from fillup to fuel light!

So I finally got to cycle through practically an entire tank with nothing but freeway driving (with a couple of small exceptions).
At any rate, driving between 60 and 65 mph, but with some upgrades and downgrades, I ended up with 40.4 mpg.
One thing I think works, is to NOT use cruise control. That way, when you're going uphill, you're not trying to accelerate. By letting the speed bleed off and maintaining constant pressure on the accelerator pedal, you don't get penalized quite as hard.

In fact, I would often cruise at 110mph or so in the old air-cooled Porsche. In my old GTI, I even managed 137mph with a full load of passengers and luggage. All time record was about 154ish in a Mercedes C-Class while living in Germany.
That being said, with gas prices being so high, it's just not as much fun anymore. Maybe someday I'll have a sports car specifically for high speed driving. In the meantime, if I have a car that has good mileage as a selling point, I'm going to try to max it out.
I cant drive 60mph in my Fit. Thats what I do on city roads normally. If Im on the freeway/highway and Im at 60mph the car pushes me to get to 70-80mph. Plus the car easies to higher speeds once above 60mph.
Anytime Im on the freeway for a longer time I can see my gas gauge slowly dropping.
I did manage 38mpg city once. I jumped with gleeeeeee

Wow, congrats on the 40 mpg range. It makes me wanna try it now, but I have no road trips planned.
Also I've noticed that the Cruise Control likes to pound on the gas until it gets to the right speed and feels very different from pedaling lightly.

Yah, the Fit's cruise control logic for hills sucks. Letting the speed bleed a little and pick it back up on the other side is the best. Constant speed is next. But the Fit falls behind and then smashes the throttle, and then overshoots the speed to boot!
CA-4E to 680N to 80E to 50E to Bus-80 to 80W to 680S to CA-4W was the first loop.
CA-4E to 680S to 101S and then 101N to 680N to CA-4W was the second trip.
Not once did I exceed 67 mph.
You won't get pushed off the road. It's called getting in the right lane, and not letting other people try to intimidate you. You should move to NJ where it's a requirement that you not let other people push you around in a car.
