Low gas alert lite

Ever since my first oil change recently, the gas gauge lite seems to turn on earlier.....before the arrow hits the "E" mark....maybe, at least 20 miles earlier ? Should that mean something to me ?

I would not think so... mine fluctuates all the time.

May or may not have something to do with the tightness of your fuel tank cap.

ummm... most of the cars I have ever driven the light comes on a little before or right before the "E line". But indeed it does fluctuate too, depends what position the car is in as well. I have jumped in and started other cars and it was on then I drove it for a short while and parked it...and low and behold it was off (and not because it died ). If the gauge fluctuates a ton I would imagine so would the light.

When my car was NEW... the light turned on sooner. Sometimes it works correctly and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I can get 50miles out of the car after the light has come. Fill up with around 9.5gal.

Then theres times when I feel like filling up just after it has come on and put about 9.7-10.1gal. I basically go by what my mileage is at half tank. If its 200miles and higher Im good for a while after the light trips.

Mine usually comes on when I still have about a 1.6 gallons left. 9.2 gallons used on a 10.8 gallon tank.

I think it comes on very early too.

At least I am pretty sure I can find a gas station with that many miles left.

Tom.

it goes on and off for me sometimes, like it'll be on and then for the next time i start the engine it'll be off. it just depends on slope of the road surface the car is on. don't worry too much about it unless the light is turning on at half tank or something.

My gas light comes on right around these numbers as well. Approx 9 gallons or so used.

You never know, I tend to let the light come on as well before I fill up, but I start to get nervous when its been on a bit. I drove about 45 miles from the time the light came on til I was able to fill up. I put in 10.2 gallons, most of those miles were highway in 5th gear at fairly average rpms, and the rest were stop and go to the gas station

I had '93 Accord which had a pretty sweet 'feature'(maybe it was a malfunction) - The gas light would come on pretty dim as you were close to "E" and would get really bright as you continued to run out of gas. When it was glowing like a flashlight, I knew it was time to hit the gas station!

yeah i dont pay attention to the light anymore. it fluctuates way to much, and after a while you'll be able to calculate when to fill up.

My gaslight seems to be coming on later than it used to. It used to come on when there was a little less than 2 gallons left in the tank, but now it comes on when it's a little closer to a gallon left.

I don't see it as a big deal. I'm trying to get myself in the habit of buying gas before it gets that low, anyway. The sensor probably does change a bit over time.
