Thumbs up Mid-Winter Driving Report

Got the Sport in October and immediately put a Tire Rack package on it, fairly inexpensive Sport Edition wheels with Pirelli Winter Carving studded tires in OEM size. Absolutely great tire performance with absolutely no vibration, thank you Tire Rack! I drive 40 miles to work one-way in Interior Alaska in a variety of weather conditions which have varied this winter from -40 F. to ice-covered roads to 6" snowfalls to pretty nice. I just need to rave about the little car. No winter issues. I have a plug-in package with oil pan heater, battery pad and block heater, and use Mobil1 0W-20. Starts up at -20 easily without being plugged in. Steering and clutch are slow when it's -25 or colder, but to be expected. Shifts great. Light and quick handling, but good stability for a little thing. I was probably most amazed by how comparitively little buffeting I felt in crosswinds of 30 mph on ice. You definitely need a relaxed hand on the wheel and to finesse the accelerator pedal and brakes, but the ABS and Brake Distribution Control do their jobs. It was surprisingly good in new snow as well, despite the sparse ground clearance. No need for 4WD. I put a Megan dual-outlet muffler on it also which makes it more fun to drive, perfect sound. 6000 miles and counting, I have to say this is a great car for the money. I even hauled a hot water heater in it, in "long mode." And the headlights are so impressive I cancelled an appointment for "moose lights." I drove it 55 mph on cruise control and had to stop at 5 stoplights, ended up with 38.2 mpg. Thanks to Honda for such a great little car!

good to hear it's working well for you

my fit's been great through 2 winters now, even with stock tires and no block heater (though i can't imagine illinois winters ever being close to a winter in alaska).

since you started a "winter" thread i feel i have to chirp in... i cant compare to -40 like that but the little bit of snow i have driven through in the fit really surprised me, the fit goes, turns, and stops surprisingly well in snow and is very controlable i was very impressed with it, it was almost comperable to driving my parents CRV, though we dont have the ground clearence for deep snow! lol

Well, its official. It hit -50 deg C today here. After sitting outside all day in an open lot in the wind with no plug in, the Fit turned over and started on the first try. Warm air within 45 seconds. Wow, this little thing continues to surprise!

Howdy, Calgary! I make that to be around -57 degrees F.! Pretty impressive! Well, you're colder than Interior Alaska has gotten all winter so far... Nice to know my car won't let me down...

I guess I won't have to worry about 20F nights here in NYC.
