Looking at getting a Fit!

So I have been trading emails with a sales person at Honda and I'm really thinking about getting a Fit. I've never bought a new car before or really had to deal with a new car sales person so If I can get any help/advice that would be much appreciated. I'm not quite sure how to respond to the last email I got from them. I don't want to dig myself a hole that I won't be able to get out of, so I'll post it below and any input would be great!

Rob,
The funny thing is I have a personal friend named Rob as well that is looking for a Fit sport and that's who I thought you were. There are about 5 different Rob's in our system and the email department forwarded me your email from this morning. So I was basing the last info I sent to you off of my friends request. Weird how this all worked out. ha-ha. So what number would you pay for a brand new fit? Maybe we can work out a deal.We also offer financing through 20 different banks and credit unions and we can often meet or beat the rate your bank is offering you, so keep that in mind when the time does come for your Fit purchase.
Could I get your new address and a current phone number to update my records here at the store. Also because of the confusion what was your old address and phone number as well o I know which rob to update.
Thanks a ton,

-Tyler

Now my main concern is the bold section. I don't want to give an amount too low and have him think I'm trying to screw him and I don't want to give an amount too high and screw myself.

Thanks!

I will be buying a 08 fit S AT in about 4-6 weeks just waiting for winter to leave for 16200.00 with all weather floor matts in that price. Try to go for the same deal.

That's for the Destination and the matts only. Which model are you looking at?

I would go for 15,430.00 and tell them you want the all weather matts in that price.

Well I just got a reply form Honda saying...

So if I could sell you the MT Fit for 15,270 plus taxes and fees, and possibly beat you APR would we have a deal?

But did not say if it was a Base of Sport. So I sent back a reply email asking that... and if it is sport I'll be on that! My guess is that would be a base model though

well, the final word from the sales person was $15,270 and that includes the destination fees. So I would just have to pay taxes and whatnot. Before I give the final yes I'll try and talk him into throwing in some all season floor matts. So is that sounding like an ok price? I've never bought a new car before so I don't want to get overcharged

I would rather negotiate the price to 15k instead of asking for accessories like floor mats. Better yet, negotiate the out the door price. Since i don't know the tax and tags on your state, 16k OTD is reasonable and doable. Just don't be scared to walk away and be confidence that 16k out the door is what you will pay for a new fit sport MT. CONFIDENCE IS KEY.

well, 15,270 is the offer I threw at him. Estimated fees, $795.25 Tax, $185 doc fee, $15 title fee, $159 registration for a yr. So all in all $16,424 and OTD. The last sales person I talked to said $16,250 plus fees/taxes which is about $17,404 OTD. Like I said though, I've never bought a new car so I just don't know how much they are willing to drop the price in order to make a sale. Lucky for me there are about 3 Honda dealerships fairly close to me so I can hopefully put them against each other if need be.

Don't expect to get much if any off the sticker, though some here have done it. Are you trading in a car? If so, make sure you have settled on the price then negotiate your trade-in.

I tried to get the AW mats thrown in, too, but they wouldn't go for that. I did, however end up getting what I initially asked my trade so it worked out even better.

Are you using your own financing or paying cash? That can also give you a little negotiating room.

Good luck. Hope you get a good deal.

Well as it turns out I was talking to a used car sales man and he did not know jack about selling a new fit... he basically turned around and told me he was wrong and that the $15,270 was under their invoice price so there would be no way that they could sell a car for that amount. So I'm basically back at square one. I don't have my own trade in. My previous car was a 91 civic hatchback and someone decided it was a good idea to bust out two of my windows and steal my stereo... so I just sold it off and using that to put down and I'm working on getting a loan from my bank so I can just pay cash. I figured if I walk in the door with X amount of money I can say take it or leave it.

i would think you should try to use his mistake as leverage. go to someone higher up if possible and throw it right back at them, it was their mistake that a used car guy was giving you prices, they should be responsible for making you a happy customer.

if they don't there's plenty of other honda dealers out there, good luck to you

15,270 (which is dead on MSRP For an MT sport) including destination is pretty good. But then dont pay a doc fee on top of that.
That is just a random tacked on fee. Its one or the other.
Invoice I think is only around 14,700. Which is still above it when you
factor in holdback. There is alot of literature out on the net now about
the Fit's pricing, and gooogooobs of tips on negotiations.
So good luck and sorry to hear about the poopy/cluelesss/lying used
salesman.
But on the bright side you now have a smidgeon more experience

yeah, I'm just not really sure where to go now. The guy I talked to back in December found out I was dealing with another sales person so he threw a fit and now I have been pawned back off on him... and he was not willing to budge on the price at all. I guess I'll try and find some info on what a dealership pays for the car, bring it in along with 5 pages of emails from this used salesman and throw them an offer and if they don't accept, walk out the door.

Wow, a salesman throwing a fit? I can picture it but it's not in his interest if he wants your business. Unless you signed a contract to deal only with him, I'd tell him to grow up and treat the next customer better (as you buy from a different dealership to really rub it in).
