A 40+ MPG tale
ABSOLUTELY!!! Then they sleep through the light for about 8 seconds after it turns green. It seems as many people are in a hurry to go nowhere. I used to be one of those people - but it makes no sense. Sure, you may get 1 or 2 cars ahead of me, but due to red lights you are only going to arrive at your destination about 0.0025 minutes faster than I am.While they waste even more gas flooring it back up to the speed limit, I am enjoying fantastic fuel economy and less wear on my car.
3rd full tank today. around 1100 miles
397.5 miles 9.77 gal with one short Auto click after 1st auto pump off.
40.69mpg
It was better for one reason only
1 sec drafting on the Freeway is incredible.
Like the other fills, 70% freeway at 65mph and the rest stop and go 45 to 55 city.
My wifes 99 Accord Automatic is bad and I drooped it off at Honda for the $1600+ replacement. I will drive my F350 Turbo Diesel Thursday and the lead foot wife my Fit. As she had not driven a stick in a number of year she drove back from the dealer and to a studio to drop the kid off for lessons. I had worked to get the days mpg avg to 42+ and with her anti-eco for jusy 16miles I saw it dive to 39. Very painful knowing the work to get to that 42...

260 miles at 65 to 70 with 1 sec drafting
95% freeway
maybe 50 miles with A/C on
43.93mpg

How about we list what we feel or know made the great run when we list it, so it's more that just bragging
Anyone????

I think you will get better gas mileage by not turning on and off your car at lights and if you don't worry so much about at what RPM to shift, but how the car feels...if it needs more power or not. If it needs power but you shift too early the car is going to struggle more/use more gas to accelerate. If you are really concerned with your mpg get a scangauge and read it. It will give you an idea how gas efficient you are driving.
Mile 0-288 on that tank was mostly 55 MPH or below, average about 52.5 MPH on the speedo. Driving with load (fell back to 50ish on inclines). Ran some errands and 1 or 2 160 mile round trips to the parents, with minimal gliding.
Mile 288-424 was a trip to baltimore area. hitting between 55-65 with a good bit of gliding including some 1+ mile ones.
I have another tip for "HYPERMILING." My grandpa has a 2001 Accord and he set his cruise control to 55 mph for 3 hour trip to houston. The whole way he did 55. He averaged over 54 mpg. This speed for some reason -i know but can't explain- makes gas mileage VERY high. try it.
), I'm going to buy one. My wife wants one as well - we're going to compete to see who gets higher fuel economy figures.I believe coasting in neutral and shifting as early as possible (usually < 2500 RPM) has made the most significant difference for my fuel economy improvements.
Here's what I plan to check out as soon as I get my ScanGauge:
Drafting on highway - how much does this help?
60 vs 55 on the highway...
And, of course, trying various routes to/from work
Ooooh, ahhhh, what a wild social life you must have.
Just kidding.
Let us know how it turns out.BTW - the people who floor it at stop lights just to get up to the speed limit/flow of traffic really really really reall annoy me, because they're often behind me!
Yeah... it's a wild life I live
Actually I lead a fairly boring existence; my wife bought me a shirt that says 'Adorkable' with a dork giving a thumbs-up. That's me in a nutshell.
I even had a dream the other night that I was hypermiling.
I suppose I need to get out of the house more often...

I just got a 40.1 tank. Mixed driving - 30% highway, 50% suburb with some lights, 20 % city. I have to drive about 20 miles to and from work each day and I have a rider that shares gas costs. (do I get bonus for carpooling?) My 07 fit has almost 20K on it now. I just put in a K&N filter which I think will give me a small boost. I've had a ScanGuage since I got the car. Things I find that contribute to best performance are:
1. ScanGuage: almost criminal that guages ARE NOT included in non hybrid cars.
2. Coasting: just put the clutch in!
3. light timing, driving without brakes
4. Downshifting - being in the right gear for acceleration when it is needed
5. "breaking up" traffic jams on the highway - yes you can actually do this! see TRAFFIC WAVE EXPERIMENTS
6. turn off the engine at delays longer than ~45seconds
7. laying off the gas going uphill.
8. Carpooling - I loose about 5mpg with a rider but Im moving 2 people. Maybe this should be #1?
Idle observation - Im finding that getting up to speed and not trying to undershift gives me the ability to coast in many situations. It seems to get me to a respectable trip average faster.
