How in the world is everybody getting 40+MPG?

I'm wondering how some of the fitfreak members are getting 40+mpg when I can only get between 34-36mpg? I am trying my best to get better mpg but 38.xxmpg only happened on my first(or 2nd tank). I try to hypermile half of the time but the result is the same. I don't accelerate fast, shifts are between 2000-25krpm most of the time but no progress. I notice also that when I drive the car faster I can get better mpg for my full tank of gas. Weird.

Never achieved 40 mpg. I average around 30 mpg, but that's because it takes me 1.5 hours to go 20 miles. My daily round trip commute is 3 hours long to travel a total distance of 40 miles.

After driving the car 30k+ miles I've come to realize that the car, the 5AT, is happiest traveling between 70-75mph. I've acheived well over 40mpg during trips like this. This keeps the rpms around 3k.

My best tank ever: 37mpg start to finish. MY worst: 24mpg start to finish.

I am wondering the same thing. The 40+mpg club seems too be very exclusive, but at the same time it seems very do-able. I average 34.6 with 7000 miles.

Last weekend I did a mini-road trip (San Diego to Los Angles) and thought it was the perfect opportunity to join the 40+mpg club. I tried to drive conservatively. I used vans/SUVs to pace my speed at around 70mph. When it was all said and done, I'd traveled 362.1 miles on 9.094 gallons....

39.82mpg!!!!!!!!!!.... Epic fail.

38 mpg is still freakin' phenomenal for a car that's not even a hybrid.

i got 42 mpg by doing all highway driving with no passengers or cargo, and hypermiling when i was able to.

so I have some questions for you

-Do you have an AT or MT (from reading your post I would think MT but the AT can do what you said also but with the paddles)

-Are you just driving city or hwy? If both then in what ratio?

-Do you coast? Now do you coast in neutral or in 5th?

-Do you use CC?

-Whats your tire pressure?

-Do you accelerate very slow?

-How many miles do you have now?

and last but not least (there are sooooo many others..) is there alot of stop and go traffic often.
Driving slow usually does not give great MPG's nor does driving too fast.

Downhill, on neutral, with the wind? 40mpg seems possible but way too much trouble for me. I average 30mpg give or take depending how my daily commute goes. But during my road trips to Colorado which I take a couple times a year, I do get about 36-37, and thats with stints of 80+mph here and there. Hence 40 doesnt sound out of the question if you stuck to around 65-70mph. Problem is I just cant do that for too long when all the cars around you pass you by. I have no patience, which explains why I dont go fishing.

You can get 40+mpg as long as you don't accerelate fast or try not to do a lot of stop and go and also drive at highway speeds with your tires properly inflated.

Some other things that will help is flat land and no strong winds.

Get a scangauge if you want to see how your driving is affecting your mpgs...that way you can adjust and get more miles out of a gallon of gas.

agree on the flat land part if you try to drive on road with little hills going up them fit wants to down shift to have power to make it.. and you just try acceleratign from stop sign, redlight slowly not racing from light to light helps also

I drive with cruise control pretty much the whole time. About 90% highway, accelerate slow, tires are ok not over inflated or underflated. I have about 1400 miles on my fit with manual transmission.

Scenario 1:

I drove with cruise control about 60-70mph, 90% highway, accelerate slow. No passenger, tires are good, uses cruise control and on neutral while going downhill. Got 38.59mpg doing this.

Scenario 2:

I drove mix with normal driving and then grandma driving(hypermiling), on neutral while going downhill and was able to get 35.xx mpg.

Scenario 3: I tried to hypermile pretty much my entire driving but still mix with normal driving, on neutral while going downhill and only got 34.xxmpg.

Seems like hypermiling is not really for the fit, I think hypermiling are only for hybrid cars. When I drive normally I get better gas mileage, when I hypermile my mpg decrease. Not sure if others are getting the same result

Yeah this is the most credible statement. He did not get 40mpg so I'm correct

I tried grandma driving style not using cruise control, mpg did not improve. Left me tired.

I had 48psi in my tires, 500lbs of total cargo (people, luggage), the SRI and I ran CC at about 74mph. No headwind, and some drafting behind a semi, and I got a best of 43.8mpg for about a 150 mile stretch. I averaged about 40.5mpg coming and going between Memphis and Gulf Shores, AL.

I didn't really employ a bunch of the hypermiling techniques.

Before the SRI, tires at 38psi, and running usually about 80-85mph with CC, I was getting about 34-36mpg max. Keeping it between 70-75mph, does sound like the way to go.

75 mph?!?

OK, this is good. I have a 5AT with 1700 miles so far. Tire pressures 34 psi and one or two people only.

My speed limit is from 45 to 60 and mostly 50 to 55 on the highways.
Currently I can get 25-26 mpg with mixed driving. Never been much above 28 mpg.
