ran outta gas

a few weeks ago... ever since then, i've noticed a horrible smell and ultra shitty mileage.

i bought some of those little bottles of fuel addatives like the heavy duty super condensed stp injector and carb cleaner, regular stp injector and carb cleaner, and also an stp gas treatment.

question: are they safe and do they really do much of anything if at all?

it's possible when you ran out of gas some "gunk" collected at the bottom of your fuel tank that would normally not be sucked into the engine could be causing the smell and mileage issues.

I would go for a bottle of techron concentrate or fuel injector cleaner, a full/fresh tank of premium, and run the car hard for a while to get the gunk out

if that doesn't do it, you might have to move on to seafoam

Running out of fuel is VERY bad ju ju for your converter. It may be partially clogged with deposits and hence the bad smell. Use the injector cleaner and take it for a nice long expressway jaunt and run the crap out of it (keeping to legal speed limits Yea right). Try just running hard for a few days (forget your good gas mileage quest for a few days) doing all that will keep the converter nice and hot and MAY burn off the bad bad gunk that is in there now. If that doesn't work it's time to replace the converter.

Doesn't anyone read and believe their owners manual anymore. There is a nice big section in BOLD tell every owner NEVER RUN OUT OF GAS now you know they are telling the truth.

Wow, you are the FIRST person I have ever heard of running out of gas in the Fit. This is because the Fuel gauge is very pessimistic.

How many miles did you drive with the low fuel warning light on before you ran out? Any idea? I have gone 38 miles so far.

.

A side note on that, NEVER EVER put diesel into your tank, I know it sounds common sense, but the dealership I was at, a lady destroyed her 4k mile TL type S by putting diesel into it, she completely clogged her cat, and on top of that destroyed 5 of 6 cylinders

I'd imagine that if you put diesel in the Fit, it would run for a mile or two depending on how much regular gasoline was in the tank, then sputter out and shut off.

well, see, that's where i'm not really sure because i kinda miscalculated... hence the running outta gas problem. but i can tell you for sure 100% positive that i've driven at least 50 miles, AT LEAST, on the light several times before, that much i do know.

Based on my experience I'm estimating the light comes on when you have about 1.5 to 2 gallons remaining. I've gone 30 over on the light a few times and wind up taking on just shy of 10 gallons.

yeah i'd just seafoam the car. but regarding the lady who ran diesel...why the hell would you do that x.x. Isnt diesel more expensive than premium nowadays?

That little gas pump looking light comes on for a very good reason!

You really gotta pay attention to a few things. You learned that running out of gas is apparently pretty bad. Do you monitor your fuel efficiency? You should. You'll start to learn what kind of range you're getting depending on your driving habits.

For instance, I know my driving nets me 32.xxMPG. I also know that when the gas light comes on in my car, it takes about 8.7 gallons to fill.

Simple calculations tell me that I have a bit more than 60 miles of range when the gas light comes on.

Do your calculations and always... ALWAYS... side with caution. Getting gas today is cheaper than a new engine or cat or whatever else might get fouled up.

As I've said earlier, I have gone up to 40 miles on the low fuel light. I'd really like to see if I can hit 60.
