My Fit's handling saved my ass tonight!

Yep, I would probably be toast... splattered on the side of the highway, no joke, if the Fit wasn't such a great and responsive handler. I was driving down I-91S through Hartford tonight and looking for the exit ramp to get onto I-84E. I saw a sign that said to switch into the left lane so I did, and I'm just cruising along at 65 looking for an off ramp when SUDDENLY I peak over a small rolling hill and see a CEMENT wall ahead of me!!

Basically there is no real off ramp for this exit, the left lane literally just splits off onto a tight 90 degree turn and onto I-84!

You can see it here, if the link works properly...

Google Maps

Anyways I scream @#$%! and slam on the brakes and throw the wheel to the left. Gotta give credit to the amazingly sticky RT-615 tires I was on, there was absolutely no drama (except on my own part) and the car just took the exact path I told it to. I swear the steering on the Fit is telepathic, especially with the performance tires and suspension mods I have. I've always found its accuracy pretty amazing but right now I'm grateful it probably saved me from hitting that wall.

In a lesser car like my old Toyota Solara and I likely would have either understeered and plowed into the wall, or oversteered into god-knows-what--not kidding, I've gone into pretty bad slides in that car before by accident.

Uh.. moral of this story is I love my Fit, and I need to pay better attention to exits on the highway.

Yikes. I have to admit ... some of the highways in CT have a few of those "what the F#%@?" reactions though.

Glad you're safe! One of the reasons why i love Fit. Such nimble handling, would make a great track car.

Sounds like you were driving a little too fast in an unfimilar corner too . Over many yearr of driving I've avoided more accidents with the throttle and steering wheel than I have with brakes. Every vehicle I own always gets full suspension work and good tires. It's awesome not to see how well the Fit's chassis works in a cash. Some cars specially with OEM tires NEED their 5 start crash ratings.

That sounds scary. Wall in your face. I had people cut me off hard and if my Fit wasn't responsive they would've hit me. Some guy (i think was drunk or some kid) cut me off twice driving wildly on the highway. I honked at him in anger! But no dmgs.

Glad you are ok. Nice to know we got little handling cars.

^^ I'm pretty sure there are signs there, the big yellow ones with the directional arrow that signifies an extreme turn, plus yellow speed limit signs too. Regardless it is a pretty brutal turn and you can see paint marks on it from where people have hit it before lol.

Yeah, unfortunately 99% of the time those yellow signs showing a turn or reduced speed just amount to a tiny bend in the road. There are signs all over Farmington that say "20mph!!!" and a few moments later you're wondering where the actual turn was. I guess some are just totally overzealous and some are actually a good warning of a tight turn coming up.

man we just got some new roads here getting off the freeway for my house exit.

so literally when you get off the freeway you get onto a road called camino del norte.4 lanes but the far left lanes(2) are for turning onto the freeway to go south. well....to keep going straight you have to take the farther right lanes.

usually you hug the turn and go onto the first 2 lanes but in this case its different.

so as i was turning the right way....some guy thinks im going to hit him. but in reality i was only following the curve of the line. haha. anyways so he turns and trys to avoid me...but almost hits me. so i swerve, and thank god for my rim set up, it turns with a flick of a steering wheel i dodged 3 cars from hitting each other and myself. confusing but long story short...

im thankful that my car handles well heh

People don’t take into account how having a very well handling car actually prevents a lot of accidents. Most people will look at a Fit and think "you go head to head with a hummer and your dead", that’s true but unless you are blind, you should be able to easily maneuver away from it

That's so true, people never think of avoiding accidents, only surviving them. In the book "High and Mighty" the author quotes AUTO COMPANY research that says the target buyers of SUV's tend to have low confidence in their driving. It's a pretty interesting read into the bigger is better mindset and how SUV's came to be so popular in the US.
