12 gallon tank
12 gallon tank
ok so to make a long story short filled up this morning with 12 gallons... WTF?! i was gonna get all fancy and post a pic of the receipt, but yeah way too lazy. here comes the fun part, my gas light had been on for a day or two, no worries it's only 6 miles round trip for work. decided to kill some time while on the clock and hook it up so i wouldn't waste time afterwards. put $60 into the cash machine on the pump, put the nozzle in and set it on the slowest click. it hits 10 gallons and i think ok any second now. 10.2, 10.4, 10.7... um, that's not right. i check to see if it's overflowing... nope. 11 gallons, 11.3, 11.7, and i think, is it even pumping or is this thing rigged to rip me off cuz that much isn't even supposed to be possible. and then magically at 12 gallons, gas starts shooting out, spewing all over me, my car, and the pump. totally ghey.
bottom line, how bad is gas going to F up my paint? and what should i do, contact the gas co?

U should have told the attendee at the station that the gas nozzle is malfunctioning. It should have stopped by itself as a safety warning. They might have refunded what you would have lost when it spewed out (maybe like $.50 cents or something) but yeah that nozzle is defective.
It's not going 2 eff up ur paint as long as u wiped it off. Gas isn't like paint thinner or brake fluid that will eat through ur paint. If possible, wash it just to be on the safe side.
Also, you topped it off at 12 gallons because you filled up ur tank all the way up to the tip top of the gas tank (rather then it being stopped by itself by the nozzle) as well as some extra fluid inside the gas tank hose that runs from the gas tank cap all the way to the tank itself (that's probably an extra 2/3 gallon right there.

thansk kookev147258369, i guess i'll eat the extra $4 instead of hassle with the man over it.
and i put $60 in the cash machine on the pump cuz all i have is $20 bills and gas is $4 and as i previously stated i had been driving with the gas light on for a few days and i wasn't sure $40 would be enough to top off.

Gas isn't going to F up your paint unless you leave it there to eat it up. Also, looks like you filled up your Vapor Recovery Canisiter with that extra gallon of gas. I dunno if that can be good at all for your car. I would complain.
Yes, this is a malfunctioning gas nozzle. By law, they're suppose to have it fixed or have an "Out of Order" sign on it because it violates state enviromental law.

If you keep pumping gas into the Fit eventually it will fill the extension line and then gas will spurt from the gas filler nozzle regardless of the backpressure valve in the nozzle. That appears to be the case when you 'added' 12 gallons.
The correct way to fill your tank is fill on the slowest rate til it shuts off automatically, then listen for the 'gurgling' to stop and fill again slowly to shutoff. Do that sequence 2 more times and stop. If you want to even out at the next dime Ok but don't try to fill again with nozzle shutoff.
Good old government emissions controls are the reason for the nozzle acting the way it does.

Dude sucks you got hosed (no pun intended) for a couple extra bucks due to what sounds like a bad pump. Yeah you should have gone to the gas guy and they probably would have given you back a dollar or two. But its your time and your dime if thats worth your two bucks. That being said it won't do anything to your paint so long as you wash it off. This happned to my Integra years back, but in that case the hose split and the gas never made it into the tank and instead just sprayed the side of the car. The attendant allowed me to fill up on another pump, I got my car washed, all good.
) at a gas station right before the white stone bridge in Queens, NY, should have listened to the girlfriend and gotten gas before I ran out. It was around $3.45/g everywhere else, but good thing I did get the gas because I didn't see another station for a while.
Don't top off
OK, it's been covered, but it isn't good to top the car off. Can cause problems for your charcoal canister (or whatever they use now). Your vapor canister.
That being said, I sometimes still do it, when I find a so-called "good" deal on good gas.
I do wish the tank was bigger, but then, there are many things on my wish list. Claymore knows what, I mean who, is #1 on there! But that's another thread.
Glad you weren't smoking when the gas erupted on you.

i always use the slowest click and never double pump once it auto shuts off. it was at 2a so there was only one gnarly lookin african american working and i was afraid to bother him. matter of fact he might have been straight from the congo cuz he had a vicious accent. i was like what excuse me i'm sorry nevermind bye. scary.
I always fill 'er up until it clicks off and then round it off to the next 25 cents. For example, if it clicks off at $25.13 I add enuf to take it up to $25.25. No real reason 'cept that I like even amounts.

I was just at a pump in a Mobil station that only put in 4 gal before stopping and kept clicking stop when I try to continue. Went to another pump and it rejected my card, apparent (according to the attendant) they only allow one transaction per 24 hour period. Had to go to another station to fill it up. The attendant didn't seem to care when I told him one of the pumps was acting up. Errr.
That's number two...
But of course, Adriana Lima is #1 on my wish list.
But if I had her, the damn squirrels would probably just take her, too.
