Where do I pay sales tax?

Hello,

I recently bought my Fit in Kansas, but I live in Missouri so the dealer didn't collect the tax. He said I am suppose to pay it in Missouri. I was wondering where do I go to pay my sales tax?

Yeah, I'm suppose to pay the sale tax in MO, but I'm not sure where I'm suppose to go.

Yep, when you go to the DMV or wherever to register the car with your home address, you'll pay it then. B.S. I think. 6% is the average state sales tax in the U.S. and for a car is too high I think. Delaware has no sales tax

When you get your license plate in Missouri they will add the sales tax to your fees for registration, etc. Many states have limits on how long you can get by with temporary licenses so don't mess around. Run out of your temp license and things can get messy.
Be glad KS didn't collect first. Good dealer.
PS if Missouri collects property taxes be assured you won't be long getting your bill for that too.

I'd say it is. You don't know how to do something until:

1. You've done it.

OR

2. Someone tells you HOW to do it.

You will pay the taxes when you apply for the title. Here is Missouri's web page: Motor Vehicle Titling or Buying a Vehicle
Here is the web page to estimate how much you will pay in taxes: Motor Vehicle Sales Tax Calculator

It's 6.25% here for autos.

8.25% for reg. sales tax.

0% for state income tax.

OP - google the words "county tax office (name of your county)". That should tell you where you can pay sales tax.

Do I include my "paint sealant package" and warranty in my purchase price, as well as the tire and lien tax? Also, if I click on office locations, are those the places I can do my title work, license and registration, and pay taxes?

I don't know where you live, but the same site will give you the phone numbers of the DMV. If you live in Kansas City, I'd try Lees Summit or the Belton office. They always seem to answer. I believe you include everything you purchased for the car minus any trade. It should be on your paperwork you got or will get from the dealer. Good luck.

When you go to the Motor Vehicle Division office in the state you reside and register your FIT, get the title or note from lender who will hold the title, also you will apply for a license tag(s) to put on your car and a registration 'card' to carry with you to show 'ownership'; that department will include the license plate fee, state sales taxes, registration fee, and perhaps personal property taxes in what you have to pay in order to 'drive away'. They may also check your insurance.
You will have to provide your bill of sale from the dealer (often called the buyer's contract) to the clerk when you apply for registration. The sales tax usually is a given percentage between any trade-in value and the full price you paid for the vehicle.
And yes the closest or most convenient DMV office is the right place. Be sure to do it before your temporary tag expires. And take the bill of sale or good copy with you when driving around. Ditto insurance info including agent's name and phone number.
Sounds very involved but the clerks are so experienced it will be a blur. You can call ahead of time and they will not only tell you how much $ to bring but may even give you an appointment so you won't have to stand in line lon. (well, not very long)
good luck
cheers.
