Why are used Fits so expensive?

Well, when I was searching for Fits on autotrader.com and on eBay, i noticed that used Fits are only a small percent cheaper than that of new Fits. I know that Hondas have really high resale value, but there has to be more to it. Is it because of the fact that they are new, or that there aren't many of them?

Here are a few.

I don't know if maybe im just so used to the idea of a hatchback as being cheap or something. Can anyone help me?

Probably because they are in demand as Gas is going through the roof---

Most of those ads are from car dealers. So that is probably normal. The one private sale I saw was asking 10k. Give it another year.

X2

Resale price on a lot of smaller, more fuel-efficient cars is increasing because of the current gas prices. Try to find an old Geo Metro, and see how much they are going for. It's insane!

I was thinking that as soon as the new Fit came out that 1 gen Fits would lose some of their value. Do you think that this may happen?

In many markets, the availability of a new Fit is an issue now. In SE Fla they are not easy to find. The dealer I bought mine from in Feb told me 2 weeks ago that the two allocated to them and on the boat are sold and if you want one you will have to pay MSRP and wait. They have none on hand.
That plays into the value of a Fit (used or not). Bird in hand deal.

The time is also close when you can't buy a new 2008 Fit. Like most Honda details, the facts are impossible to find and all we have is speculation, but the fact is 2009 Fits will be delivered this Fall and unless they do something very different, that means they will stop making 2008 Fits around end of Summer. It's now June. I'd guess that leaves 2 more months of 2008 Fits production at best

It's because the previous owner did you a favor and broke the car in for you. You should be glad it isn't more than the original MSRP.

A few weeks ago on CNN, they showed a 93ish Geo Metro with the 1.0L 3 cylinder sell for $7300 USD on Ebay. Thats about how much they were new!

Three reasons;

1) They are Honda's; so expect high resale value

2) Gas is freaking expensive, high MPG cars are in demand

3) They are Reliable and have low maintence

as much as i agree with everyone about honda reliability, you can use that as the only excuse as to why its so expensive. Accords and civics have been reliable for ages and even they wont ask for prices so close to msrp.

could it be gas? yeah it could, but then again gas hasn't been through the roof long enough to make NADA values jump along with them.

Its bascially demand. Even before gas was an issue, the fit was super hard to find and the general public desires it and car sellers know this.

Look at the VW r32: you'll never find a civic si that holds its value THAT well, and the reason for it is because it was a great peformer, and limited in its run.

Same as our fits. Yaris' get great gas mileage too, but toyota forgot to inject them with a decent interior and a strong fun to drive factor. You slap that on a car and add fuel efficiency and you have a vehicle that is coveted...and that everyone wants.

As nice as the new 09 fit will be, a lot of people like the idea of ours being harder to find. It will get to the point where you see more 09 fits on the road than older ones.

when i bought my car, i was originally looking for a used '07 white one. but when i saw how much they were used, i decided to just get a new one for around the same price. unfortunately they don't make white in '08... so i have black.

I'm going to have to agree with eldaino.
I look at prices of used Fits since last year and it was always close to msrp or higher Only decent deals were from private sellers.

Straight economics: when supply is exceeded by demand the price goes up. Those of us with Fits aren't letting go of them for the same reason lots of buyers want them. When demand exceeds supply the price goes up; high crude prices due to low supply equals high gas prices.
