Do aftermarket HUs make the steering wheel buttons useless?

If I decide to install an aftermarket head unit in my [2009] Fit [when I purchase it], is there a way to make the buttons on the steering wheel work with the new head unit?

Which buttons are you refering to?

The reason I ask, is because the USDM Honda Fit does not come with radio controls on the steering wheel.

I was referring to volume control, etc.

I thought I saw radio controls in the pic of the '09 Fit interior (USDM)

The only confirmed pics I have seen of the 09 fit has been the JDM fit. I don't believe any features for the USDM will be confirmed.

In the event that it does have wheel controls, I doubt that it would work with an aftermarket head unit.

I thought everything shown on this page was confirmed for the USDM:

So, wait, let me understand this. You are asking about mods that might be made to a vehicle that isn't even out yet, that you, nor anyone has, and that in a picture of a JDM model you saw had what you think are radio buttons, and you are asking us what mods will work or not?

Dude, you would have a lot more luck calling Honda direct in Japan and asking some engineer that. No one here would even begin to know.

All I can say from past experience is that on some cars you can use an interface module to retain some functionality with some buttons with only certain head units.

But no one is gonna know anything about a newly designed car that is months away from delivery.

We'll just have to wait and see. There're ways it can be done, usually with an aftermarket steering wheel interface, but we won't know until they release the 09 models.

I thought everything on this site was confirmed for the USDM:

2009 Honda Fit - The Official Honda Web Site

(at least that's what the dealership told me)

It says this at the bottom of the web page:
©2008 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. All information contained herein applies to U.S. vehicles only

Also, I assumed since the steering wheel was on the left side that it was a US car...my bad

.

That certainly looks officially official. Obviously specs must have been finalized, in order to start production of the cars for shipment to these shores. I do have to say I love the redesigned interior, and the exterior is growing on me too.

USDM model is confirmed to have Volume buttons, and other Radio control buttons on the steering wheel.
Im no expert, but i doubt they will work with a aftermarket HU.

PAC makes interfaces that work with aftermarket radios and retain steering wheel controls. Chances are there will be a kit eventually, but I would be pretty confident saying I am sure not at the 09 Fit launch.

a pain in the ass to install. eh..well not really just a lil complicated to get it right.

its practically a wired remote and the infrared has to be positioned and hidden so you dont see wire. i had mine poking its head out slightly by the center console...

less than 100 bucks
If you get the brand specific interface then you dont need to do the annoying infrared setup. I had the Alpine in the Fit in my Durango before this, and used the Apline PAC interface, worked like a charm and was super easy to install. Took all of maybe 15 minutes to do. If only the Fit had wheel controls it would be installed right now!

Not very likely. If radio controls were in the Fit steering wheel you might have a chance but otherwise almost 100% no. Well, you can do anything with enough money and contacts; if you are a relative of Howard Hughes you have a better chance. Somewhere I think there's an outfit that offers a RF controller that lets you control the volume and station selection similar to a TV remote. You might try googling that.

depends on the HU, some are designed to work with wheel controls. If it is able to then and all you need to do is get a harness or splice into it.
