Costco Discount
Costco Discount
I am not a Costco member, so cannot find if there is a discount on the Fit, or what it would be. Anyone know?
I know Costco has car discounts, which provide a no-haggle way of buying a car, but typically I wouldn't consider doing it, because I can (hopefully) negotiate lower on my own. Except for a car like the Fit, which 'doesn't' sell below MSRP.
Thanks!

In Feb when I bought my Fit, the Costco discount wasn't that great - it fell somewhere between invoice and MSRP. I did better negotiating via email. Things have changed significantly since Feb though. Nowadays when everyone is paying MSRP or more, the Costco discount would be a decent deal.
It all depends on the dealership and if they honor the Costco discount for starters. I got my '08 Fit Sport for $500 under MSRP plus no $1900.00 dealer markup that they had on every one of their cars. Costco rules as a store as is, but being able to get a discount on my car and having a no haggle dealership experience was great. I bought my FJ Cruiser through the Costco program back last December as well

I looked at the Costco program on a '08 Fit - just to see what the offer would be. The Costco dealer I was referred to was about 70 miles away. Some guy called me from the dealership and basically told me the Fit was so popular that the Costco would just get me the price with no markup. So I said, "MSRP?" and he said, well, MSRP plus the dealer prep package. I asked what that was. He said it's $700 worth of dealer installed stuff, like cargo tray, pinstripe, mud guards, floor mats, etc. I said I don't want that stuff - just the car, right off the truck. He said they put that on every single car. No exceptions. Then he said every other dealer does the same thing (which is not accurate).
I won't be going to that dealer when I buy my '09 Fit in December.

When I bought my Fit in Sept. of '06, I had talked with 18 Honda dealers in NorCal and could not find one being sold at MSRP. All insisted on either a high markup, or a low ($500.) markup PLUS around $1500. worth of unwanted accessories. My Costco car purchase conversation told me that the program guarantees the lowest price on the car that you want by going to their member dealer who carries your car. BUT, because of the popularity of the FIT, they could not honor the guarantee. But why not contact their member Honda dealer anyway? So I did, and the dealer said that they only sell at MSRP with no mandatory over-priced accessories and no "dealer prep package". Only MSRP, on every car. So I bought their only Fit in stock.
Early June, MSRP -$200

Here's how it works: you don't know what the discount is going in. You're supposed to pick out the vehicle you want, show your Costco card, get the invoice and MSRP, then ask the Authorized Contact (not just anyone) for the "Costco 'Member-Only' Price Sheet". Costco make quite a commotion about the process. (You're not obligated to buy the car.)
The obvious problem is that you're limited to choosing from the stock on hand. Given that there may be no 2009 Fits just sitting around unsold for awhile, the Costco discount probably won't be much help for a few months. Plus it's not likely to amount to much, at least initially. I may wait until winter to see how things look.

To perhaps clarify, only dealerships participating in the program even know what the Costco discount price is, so the others couldn't possibly honor it.

If you are already a Costco member, depending upon where you live, the Costco recommended dealer will not be held to the normal terms of the Costco car purchase program because of the popularity of the car. But it is very likely that YOUR Costco recommended dealer will still price YOUR Fit at MSRP, just like mine did. The Costco Honda dealer will most likely be a dealer who does not make a practice of ripping off their customers, the way that many of our members have complained about.
You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, by using the Costco program. The few fitfreak members who bought their car at a price under MSRP were just plain lucky.

It should be noted that the 2009 Fit isn't available on the Auto Program right now anyway.
I used the Costco Program just last week to get my 08 Fit. If you can use it, I couldn't recommend it more. I got it for a couple hundred below MSRP, which was much better as three other dealerships were several thousand above, not including any add ons. The only add on I took was a protective paint coating, which is much better than I had anticipated. And even then, the protective paint coating was half off with the Costco deal.
The best part was simply no haggling. I had an appointment, walked in a test drove the one I wanted (the one with less than 2 miles!) and was gone with the car in under an hour. It was much better than my three other attempts to buy!

With the positive results of most of the Costco program users in buying their Fits, it is my impression that most dealers will rip you off if they can, and most can. Costco tries to offer the best products at the lowest prices. They are not going to set up a crooked dealership in any location as their Auto Purchase Program representative. Individual Costco program Honda dealers are not bound by the Costco guarantee due to the extreme popularity of the Fit, but your chances of getting the best deal on a Fit are still much, much higher than they would be at most other Honda dealers.
Thanks everyone for your responses.
Sounds like it might be well worth it. If I get a Fit through the membership, then I can fill the car up with a huge bulkload of toilet paper and take pics for ya! Wonder how many rolls I could fit... 400?

If you have a family, you need the Costco membership. My wife and I greatly appreciate the savings in buying the "staples" for our household. The savings on the purchase of a Fit would pay for quite a few years of your membership. An "Executive Membership" would generate enough rebates to pay for the membership every year. Try it.
