Sad day: Hit and Run(?)

so here is how the story goes...

It was yesterday when I was coming out from the community centre with a bunch of friends. One of my friends yells at me, "YO DUDE YOUR CAR GOT HIT!". At first I was like WTF... so I run to the car to see what happened. The front bumper was scraped up on the side with paint marks of the car that hit me. I was in shock more than anything, I didn't know what to do. The car that hit me was no where to be seen. So I was about to call the cops because it was definitely a Hit and Run.

Here is gets more interesting...

One of my other friend was on the phone was some dude who was playing basketball with us in the gym, and he left to go see his girlfriend. The dude tells my friend that his bumper got ****ed and told my friend that he dipped the area. He also told that it was a black Fit (MY CAR) and blah blah... Obviously, I kinda knew the dude because we were playing ball together, so my friend was like, "you hit my friend's car!", and he came back soon after. When he came, he was apologizing and telling me that the bills and stuff is going to be taken care of by him. My worries just lessen a little because I woudn't have money to fix the damage myself. So I decided not to go through with insurance and just let that dude pay me after it's done.

At least it was a piece of good news....

Let's cut the talk and see the damage!

Damage at the fog light covers as well...

Paint from the dude's car... there's paint chip too

I'm guessing it's going to be $300-500 to get it painted as a Honda Dealership. Who knows, the bumper looks kind of slanted, I really want to get the entire bumper changed, but it would cost a lot. I'm going to the Dealer on Monday to get an estimate and get it fixed!

dont be surprised if the damage estimate gets up to the $800-$900 US range... those 5 mph bumpers dont like to get hit at all...

Dude, you are going to need a new bumper, not just paint. Sorry. Hope your friend pays up.

Maybe people in the know can agree or disagree with me but I would file an insurance claim regardless. They will go thru with the estimate and you can then choose whether to exercise the claim or not. This is to protect yourself.

I hope this guy follows through on his promise, but age and experience has shown that when there is no police/insurance involvement, verbal promises tend to fade away.....Think about it, he left the scene AND if not for a coincidentally incriminating phone conversation, you might have never found out anything; also, he's already giving himself an out by saying he's got bills (as if he's the only one!) Anyways, best wishes!!

Sorry to hear about your car. Same thing happened to me with my previous vehicles. Someone hit and ran and we never found out who did over $1300.00 in damage to my Ranger. Like above, be careful in dealing with this guy on your own. The first red flag is that he hit your car and just took off - since he got caught the only thing he could do was come back and fess up. I would advise your insurance company just in case you might need their help. You should have also called the police so that they could write up a police report and documented that the guy was willing to make good on the repairs.

Hope it all works out and your sweet ride will be restored in full.

I'm in the exact same situation. Hit and run in a parking lot. You don't not need a new bumper, they can fix it no problem. My estimate was $480, yours will be slightly higher because of the foglight cover. Mine goes in Thursday night to get fixed, good luck with yours.

Had somethimg similar happened to me a year ago. Took my car to ICBC for an estimate and the repair cost was $1500 (To get replacement Bumper, foglight cover, and front lip). I get to decide to choose cash-back deal or get it fix. Since I was gonna do tha JDM Front conversion anyway, I took the cash.

I don't know, I'll have to see on Monday at the dealership. I'm guessing changing the entire bumper would cost a lot more than a paint job. My biggest concern is that I won't be able to get the car back on the same day. I might have to wait for them at the dealer for hours, or have a friend pick me up to work!

Did you get an estimate from the dealer? Do you know if you're going to get the car on the same day? Just need to know, so I can make arrangements!

That's the only thing I'm concerned about... If I go through with insurance, I'm guessing my insurance is going to go up, and so is his. Also, there's gonna be tons of paper work that has to be done and stuff. I'm hoping he keeps his words, we exchanged some information (licence and plate) just in case... If he decides not to pay, then I'll have to go through with it.

I want a JDM conversion too! How much would it cost in total? The bumper damage cost wouldn't be enough to cover the conversion completely for sure.

I didn't go to the dealer, I went to the body shop that tan car when it get ****ed up by roof shingles during a microburst. They said they said they need the car all day Thursday and I can pick it up friday night. (I'm gonna dorp it off wednesday night).

I went through my insurance on this. When I saw the damage I called my insurance agent to ask them what to do. They told me since it was hit by another car my collision will cover it so my deductible is only $100, but at the same time since I was not in or driving the car my rates are not affected. The body shop I go to is part of Allstate's preferred network, meaning no paperwork, I call them and make a claim, the body shop calls me to make an appointment. I went for the estimate and they ordered supplies, then I just drop it off and pay the deductible when I pick it up. No waiting on checks, no paperwork etc.. and if I use one of there preferred shops any and all of the repairs are guaranteed for life.

I'd advise you to talk to your insurance company and see about your options. If this would cause a rate increase with your company they can't raise your rate just for asking about it, you would have to file a claim.

You could always tell that guy to pay the deductible and cover a rental car if needed, or better yet, see if you have rental insurance (insurance covers rental car while your car is getting fixed)

go to a body shop... not the dealership. they over charge.

they rarely do painting themselves... they usually send the car out to be painted.

I wasn't there when it happened, so I'm guessing my insurance wouldn't be affected. But if I do go through filing a claim, his insurance is going to increase for sure. The thing is, I haven't completely set on whether I should just go through insurance, bring it to the dealership, or body shop. I'm working every day on weekdays, so I have at least get an estimate from some place and then decide when I should bring the car in for the actual repair. At the same time, it's almost time for me to get an oil change, I was thinking I could bring the car in for the repair and an oil change!

I've been deciding what I should do... I bought this car back in December and it's only been 8 months. At a body shop (not the dealership), will the paint be the exact match to my car (same colour code)? I'm just afraid that if I get it elsewhere, the colour wouldn't be exactly the same as the original.

Okay guys, here's the update.

I just got back from the body shop next to my dealership, I was quoted $794! He was explaining how the bumper has to be removed and the fog light covers has to be fixed as well. There are also charges for the tow hook cover too, so it comes up to be around $500ish + labour.

Obviously, I called up the dude and told him about the estimate, he asked if I wanted to bring it to a shop that he goes to and can do it for cheaper. As first I didn't want to because the car is still new, so doing it with Honda was a good idea for me. He told me if I wanted, I can go through with insurance, but I agreed to go drive over to the other body shop to get an estimate. His body shop, I was quoted $403, almost half of what the dealer is charging. The dude said he'll pay for the $403 from his body shop and if I want, I can go through with insurance or take the cash. The body shop promise that they would do the same things that the dealer would be doing; taking apart the bumper and repainting etc. And if I have any problem, I can bring it back to them and stuff like that.

I haven't decided yet, I have until Tuesday of next week to make up my mind.

I'd go through the dealer. The body shop may be cheaper, but I think it's better to have the power of the dealer shop in case something goes wrong. Plus, they can keep records for the next owner.

Don't worry about HIS insurance, that's not your problem. He should pay the whole amount, whether you go to Honda or not.

So this guy who hit your car and left the scene really only returned because your friend told him that you were the owner of the other car right? so if nobody knew the owner of the hit car, would it be safe to say that this guy would have just followed through with his hit and run crime?

Anyway, i'd say just go through with insurance and get it repaired at the dealer's recommended shop.
