Road Tripping with GD3 Fit.
Road Tripping with GD3 Fit.
I'm going on a road trip soon with my GD3 from San Francisco, CA to Biloxi, MS. It's going to be a 5 day trip, about 2300 miles total, and I have GPS so I won't get lost
I was wondering if anyone has ever driven cross country with the Fit because I have a few questions.
- What kind of MPG did you get?
- Should I bring an extra 2 gallon fuel container because of the Fit's small gas tank?
- Am I gonna get cut off constantly because this car so slow?
- Was it a bad idea putting GF210's and a rear sway bar on my Fit proir to this trip? Should I go back to stock?
- Will I be comfortable enough to sleep in here with "Refresh Mode" if I can't find a hotel? (I'll try to park at a safe place of course)
If anyone could help please, I'm really clueless because I've never road tripped and I'm going to do this alone. It's going to suck I think it'll be a good way to get to know the Fit and it's quirks
Thanks in advance.

Drove cross country in a Hyundai a few years back. California to Key West, FL and back. No GPS, good old map quest and written directions for all the tourist type stops along the way. Took about 3 weeks off, was a lot of fun. One of those had to do it once in my life things.
As for the Fit, I drive from California to Colorado a few times a year. It's about 1100 miles one way. I get about 38-39mpg. no issues with the car except maybe the lack of power when you get to the mountains. I did about 70-75mph so I was going with the flow of traffic for the most part. I have not slept in the car for the night, but I have taken naps in it. No issues there. Other than that, the car is solid. A spare gas can is nice but I didn't need it. My GPS is able to show the nearest gas stations, so anytime I got down to a quarter tank I made sure to start looking how far the next station is.
However if you want to play it safe, these are the things you might want to bring along. They are mostly preventive stuff and stuff I bring camping, so its your call how hard core you want to go.
Gas Can
Water
Food
Warm Blanket
First Aid Kit
Flat Tire Kit / Road side emergency kit
Charger for your cel phone to plug into the lighter

Thanks FITrunner, I forgot about the First Aid Kit. I'm on 16X7 Volks right now and I will bring one of the Sport rim & tire combo along with me, it's extra weight but extra insurance, along with a Fix-a-Flat can. I don't think it'll weigh me down too much.
Haven't road-tripped in my FIT yet... but here's some thoughts:
1. Don't worry about the 2 gallon gas can.... you're still going to have to stop to put it in. Might as well hit a gas station and get a little snack, have a bathroom break, and walk around.
2. People cut you off no matter how fast or slow you drive....
3. A fresh lowering job might be risky, especially if you notice any problems now. I drove a lowered truck 1000 miles one way in a day before... and then the same home. No big deal.

I have a Garmin 660, it was ballin a few years back, not any more. But it still does the job. No fancy voices or sayings though, that would be funny. Though I can always switch the language to Russian, Arabic, etc., and try to guess what they are saying.
Thanks, I didn't know that.
If the Fit had a trunk, you'd be in it.
J/K.......not.

I have driven my fit from Memphis to Knoxville and back 5hrs both way
and From Memphis to Panama City 9 hours both ways.
i must say the fit does excellent. averaging 37mpg on both trips with the a/c off most of the time. and usually the windows cracked or down.
on both of my trips i try to keep the speed under 75 beacuse that is when i believe Vtec opens and gas mileage is considerably lower not to mention the speed limit is only 70.
i will say that on the trip to florida there was about an hour stretch of a train that included a fairlady 350z, Myself, And a 740Bmw going about 95mph. gas mileage wasnt that bad but if i had to guess i would say it was around 28mpg.
but i highly reccomend taking the fit on roadtrips. and YES i would sleep in it if i had to

i went from south florida to gatlinburg, tennessee, drove straight thru. i am lowered on df210, a little lower than you, no problems just a little rubbing on the tight mountain turns due to my low offset wheels, +38, it was great trip, around 35 to 38 mpg. bring some kind of road side emergency kit, flashlights, and food.
First thing you should do is put some sort of pillow or cushion in your seat. I drove from my home to Oberlin, LA and back in the Fit (3.5 hour drive typically). Both ways my arse feel asleep during the trip.
Also, after driving 3 or 4 hours straight get out and stretch. Any drive longer you'll end up collapsing when exiting the car.
Lay down all the unused seats it'll improve your field of vision if you are the type to look into the lane your changing into.
Supply wise FitRunner pretty much mentioned all of the basics. You could sleep in the Fit in Refresh mode comfortably just be weary of your surroundings and don't do it in the south with your windows cracked or you'll be a mosquito buffet.
Fuel millage wise I wouldn't worry about it especially if the Fit is an auto. I averaged 38 MPG on my trip to Oberlin at an average speed of 70 with the AC on 3 the majority of the trip with 2 passengers and 36 MPG at around 75+ with the same amount of passengers but the AC was frequently swapped between 1 and 2. Just keep in mind after 3400 RPMs VTEC will engage.

What route are you taking? Follow the truck drivers if you are going to crash in your car...Park somewhere safe. If you are going through Texas, particularly I-10 from San Antonio through Houston, I'll give you some tips. Take breaks as you need them, stop and stretch and get some caffeine and water...Do not pick up hitchhikers! And, do not drive if you are drowsy, and never drink and drive. Isn't there anybody who can go with you? Not even a dog?
I would rather drive alone, but I'd pack a gun for safety if I had to go on a long trip. But then I'm female.

I'm going to take I-10 pretty much the whole way from L.A. to Biloxi, MS. I think I'm going to take you advice and follow truck drivers, they drive cross country for a living, I'm pretty sure they know where to stop and which rest areas are okay. And there is no way I'm going to pick up any hitchhikers
They stink and dangerous, dangerously stinky
What sucks is that I'm going to have to make this strip alone and that's what bothers me most. I don't want to bring anyone along for the ride just to fly them back home in the end. It's too expensive. I'm only going to live in MS for a year and then drive back home. Thanks for your advice. I appreciate it.

Okay, so just a little ways east of San Antonio, I-10 becomes 2 lanes on each side...The left lane is the "fast" lane, which means warp factor 9, and the default "slower" lane is the right...Except that there is always a LOT of traffic on that stretch of I-10, and people tailgate like crazy, so what you have is a solid line of traffic rushing by on your left side, and nowhere to go if someone merges in from the right. It's insane...My survival mechanism is to stay right and try to maintain my composure...always watching the on ramp for people trying to get on, because I either have to slow down and allow them to get in front, or speed up, but then sometimes the left-lane drivers will hop over in front of you too, to get out of the way of the car that's riding THEIR butt...And then there are the semis that hold traffic back no matter what lane they're in...
It's one of the most nerve-wracking stretches of highway I've ever driven. If people wouldn't SPEED and ride your tail, it wouldn't be bad. Texans in general are very discourteous, so expect that all the way through. Houston drivers won't let you onto the highway easily and they are always changing lanes, like crickets on the highway. And, they speed. Especially on tollways = it's as if paying the toll gives you permission to go as fast as you want to!
If you drive during the night, I-10 might be easier from S/A to Houston, then cross Houston during the day.
Good luck! When are you leaving?
