Are people buying Fit's for the wrong reasons?
u should go to every dam honda forum and ask this question. NOT ONE honda but the s2000 was made to be anything special (granted si and type r). egs eks gd3s every dam honda is fuking slow, the fit is more sexy than the civic, not everyone wants a boat like a civic with a k20. believe it or not most ppl would rather see a k20 in the fit rather than the not so pretty civic, but we cant go and buy a fit with a k20 so what do we have to do? buy a fit and drop a k20 in ourselves. the fit can be used for many different things its a universal car and is customizable, which is why scions sell so well and guess what? THEYRE FUKING SLOW TOO!!! so find what the fit best suits u for and stick with it. ull love the car either way so, happy fitting
Human-keyboard interface error was always my favorite
My opinion: people put GSXR engines in go-karts, SmartForTwos, and other tiny machines not made to take anything with more than 2 digits of measured horsepower. The fit is essentially an overgrown go-kart with airbags ABS and a transmission, so I expect people to put bigger motors in it.
Heck if I had my way I'd squeeze a 3.0L in it.
The fit has everything a Honda should have but nowadays rarely comes with: good looks, clear gauges, taut steering, stable suspension, usable cargo space, comfy side-bolstered seats, and NOT having every little function controlled by some computer. Give it some oomph, and it becomes the PERFECT Honda.

I purchased my fit because I needed a slow car to keep me out of trouble. The fact it has a great chassis and gets great gas mileage were also great selling points because I wanted to create a great handling "slow" car. It is really the perfect platform for me, or at least for the next 9 months until my tickets are resolved. The OP should realize that not everyone buys a car for the same reasons.
I initially bought my Fit to replace my 02 Ford Sport Trac. I did a lot of mountain biking and still do. I knew the Fit was practical and I loved how it could carry so much cargo. I wanted good fuel economy and a 5spd. I initially went shopping for something more like a civic or a mazda3.
My first mod was putting on a trailer hitch and a good bike rack to carry my mountain bike. I love to tinker with performance and I have always loved the idea of having a "sleeper" car...
Before any major mods the best mileage I got was 834km on a tank on the highway and I averaged 500km in the city. I got that mileage with a T1R carbon intake, megan header, and an axleback exhaust. When I went on my road trip to Vegas and LA this summer, I had my stock intake, the megan header and axleback. I got worse mileage, the best tank I recorded was 740km on the highway. I really couldn't figure out why.... could it have been the intake?
After doing a lot of highway driving and experiencing that there was little to no passing power, I decided I wanted or should I say, NEEDED more power.
So, I turbo'd my Fit. Sure it was a lot of money, but my horsepower has literally doubled. My last highway tank was 785km and I average 470km in the city. That's with normal driving conditions. My worst tank was 420 and that was driving hard for the majority of that tank.
I didn't make my car a show car, no real external flashy mods, I don't race my car, I daily drive it. I still use my car with the hitch to carry my bike with me to go riding with friends.
I love my Fit and wouldn't trade it for anything else, I love the space I have on the inside, the ability to go buy a lawn mower or a 48" lcd tv and take it home without having to rent a truck or call a friend. I still get very similar gas mileage and reliability.
I had a chance to trade my Fit in before I turbo'd it for a new WRX or a Mazdaspeed3, but in the end, after test driving them I wasn't impressed. Yes, they the had power and speed I was craving, but they didn't have the space.. I popped the hatch, dropped the seats down and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "that's it?". I'd be giving up cargo space and fuel economy for a car that I thought wasn't as cool as my Fit.
I'm so glad I stuck with my Fit, I'm even more happy that I went with the turbo over the supercharger. The only 1 thing I would've liked about a K20 swap would've been the 6th gear.
So, in the end I have always had trouble accepting a car and keeping it stock... I'm over 30 now and I don't think my addiction to modifying cars will ever end. No matter what car, or how silly it may sound to some I will always be driven to be different. I love how it'd feel if I were to pull up to another SSM Fit Sport and know I put my own stamp on my car. And if they decide they want to try to beat me to the next set of lights, I'll simply press on that tiny little pedal under my right foot and show them what our "little" car can really do.
To me, and probably to a few others here in this forum, the Fit is like that childrens book "the little engine that could". I like the story, but I like it even more if that little engine had a turbo and flew over the hill!
So, to answer your question, I didn't initially buy my Fit looking for performance.
I bought it for its practicality. I bought it for its fuel economy. I bought it because I loved how it looked on the inside and out. I bought it because it is a Honda.
I didn't buy it to have ppl make smirk remarks about how "cute" my car is. I didn't buy it to have ppl say its a tiny and slow car.
Now, after experiencing all of the above, I can say that I bought it because I love to see ppls expressions who think its cute and slow after I blow the doors off their car and all they can smell is my non carb legal cat delete fumes.

Heh... thanks guys. I know it can be hard for some ppl to understand, but everyone has their own passion and their own tastes. Some will get it and some never will. I just wanted to try to explain it the best I could
i bought the fit for the gas mileage. i used to drive a nissan xterra that was super offroaded out and i was pretty much getting Lambo gas mileage without the Lambo power. LOL. Ther super handling of the Fit is just a bonus, and it doesnt hurt to get a little more power out of it and, make it a little more fun to drive. I will never expect my Fit to burn on anything(except for Yaris' and such). LOL
but thats why there is an ECO Fit section and FI section etc. on this forum

wow. talk about misunderstanding the OP.
To the OP: the fact of the matter is, that when people spend a lot of money on something that could have been done much cheaper, with better results, they always follow up with a 'you just don't get it'. its hilarious how upset people get!
having said that, besides acceleration, the fit puts up some very nice stock numbers out of all the hatchbacks honda has ever made, with a slight bump in hp, it turns itself into a very fun daily driver.
but unlike older civics and integras, the fit does not weigh as little, nor does it have a suspension that at the time was regarded as the best in class, and full of potential. not to mention that despite what any k20 whore tells you, swaps into the fit are not plug and play matters the way they are with civics/integras or even preludes/accords.
but i stil don't think anyone should go out and buy a fit specifically for modding purposes. thats a lot of money for a chassis. you can argue people spend more, but what chassis are we talking about? i honestly don't think anyone ever buys the fit specifically for that though, the itch to mod comes after the purchase and you see what can be done.
someone said it right earlier: its a honda and that is enough for some people.
just look at all the turbo 8th gen civic ex's out there. (despite the avialablity of a decent si.)
when i do get around to 'modding' my fit, it will be mostly because there are very few modded fits in my area, and i'm more preoccupied with things like making it handle better and look better. OH! and paying it off.
there are quite a few parts for it, but the fit does have quite a few ticks against it.
you can have all the sohc love you want, but the l15 is NO d series, and that has been explained in detail on other threads. plain and simple.
as far as the k20 argument goes, it only serves for bragging rights, because boosted fits are putting down much better tracktimes than k20'd ones. AGAIN proven fact.
to all fit freakers: with this in mind, people questioning your motives for modding are not as crazy or unbased as you make it out to be. and stop taking it like a personal attack on what YOU want to do. if you put it on the internet, EVERYONE can question it, don't get all defensive if they do.
at any rate, to echo iamray, everyone will mod their fit for themselves and you can't hold that against anyone. but is it the cheapest or easiest way or even most practical? no, and no one should get offened for being questioned.

eldaino pretty much answered your question, gbmurderer. I also think that everyone initially buys a Fit due to something that the Fit has to offer. No one buys a Fit because they dont like it, right? and There may be some people that buy it just to mod, but hey if you got the cash, why not. Like delaino said, the itch to mod comes after which is absolutely true. I think all honda owners get the itch. LOL
The instant I saw the Fit back in Autocar's January 2002 issue, I fell in love. "Welcome, the supermini that thinks it's a Ford Transit van," said the article, referencing its now-famous jackknifing rear seats. I'm a sucker for clever design and engineering, and the fact that the GD Fit/Jazz lasted seven years largely unaltered is a huge credit to this.
I was intrigued by the frugal twin-spark i-DSI engine tech and the compact suspension hiding in that cute body, too.
Fast forward to 2007 and I get my own GD1. Granted, it's not perfect - the ride quality on stock suspension is quite firm and the L13A3 mill is pretty gutless for a Honda engine - but I'm still having a blast with it. Call me smitten since day 1, although I acknowledge there's always room for improvement.

I purchased my fit on feb. 11. I was not in the market for a car at all but was very frustrated by my old civic leaving me stranded everywhere. I was already stranded once with my 16 month year old. The fit was the cheapest honda had to offer right now. Yes a yaris or nissan can be cheaper but it is not a honda. Would you even consider ever getting the 120K honda care for any other manufacturer of cars out there right now? About the modding of cars. Why would people spending thousands to hook up a 500 corolla? Or why would someone buy a 7 series bmw with all the options then put aftermarket rims and a system? There is a multi million dollar third party market for that reason. I do enjoy the car shows will all the tricked out brand new cars but would I do it? Not my thing. I live in NYC, forget about putting rims on the car and sleeping well at night. In college I have had a car stolen once. Lesson learned. I am all about keeping it stocked for the most part. To me it is just my car and a means of transportation.
People have different priorities honestly. You do have people who would spend 3k on rims and tires but their mortgage is late. Whatever makes them happy. If the car can handle it, sure why not- put those lambo' doors on the fit, put a k20 swap in, I do enjoy seeing it and the people who do it have a grin ear to ear. It is all good in my opinion.
One problem I have honestly is when I am stuck behind a mod car with body kit and rims obviously too big for the car, dropped too low in NYC pot hole infested streets doing less than 5 miles per hour. COME ON SERIOUSLY!

well both sides of the fence here, i Had a type r swapped ek hatch in 01, the day the warrenty ran out i had nitrous, as soon as i had the money i swaped it. It was because I loved the platform.. My fit has 12k miles on her and all i have done is the wheels. as soon as it hits 36k ill have brakes suspention exhaust maybe a turbo.
If i didnt have a starion sitting in my drive way I would swap a k20 into my fit @ 60k miles or so in a heart beat.. It is because i love the platform, the way the car looks drives (minus the 100 other hp).. I get 42 MPG average, and i wouldnt rade my 08 even steven for an 09 even with a k motor..
THe fit will be in the future a disposable car, its better to lose a couple grand in it than to deplete a large sum of value from tampering with an s2k or a mugan si.. in my opinion..
and I sold my 98 civic hb for 9500 in 2005/6 and still lost money but... I loved the cars looks.
Its the youngans who buy a fit for cheap payments and then mod the crap out of it or drive it 120 mph I worry about.. if you got the money its cool but when Honda comes to repo your blown up fit...... it wont be good ya know
