Is base Fit cost growing?
Is it just me does any body else feel like it seem the base price of the Fit is creeping up.
I used to think "super friendly" around $13k could mean something maybe that started with a $12k. Like $12,999. Now I know I am a dreamer but that is just what I was hoping. Now in the honda site it says that I should really be thinking closer to $14k for a base Fit.
" a super-friendly base model starting price of between 13 and 14 thousand dollars."
http://automobiles.honda.com/fit/index.aspx
If its going to be close to $14k for a base Fit does that mean it is going to be $17,000 or $18,000 for a sport?
I have to say if pricing is around 14 for a base that is really close to the same base prices as the civic. I was expecting this would be marketed at a price level well below the civic. A potential $600 difference for a new car I feel is a very small seperation. (possible Base fit $13,960, base Civic $14,560)
I realize it is just my bad for having different expectations, but I feel it was reasonable to assume that the Fit would enter Hondas line up at significant price point below the civic rather than roughly equal to it.
what do you think?

Well if Honda prices it at 16K then that is plain stupid being that I can go get a new Si for 19K..Honda needs to follow Toyota's suite witht the Yaris at 10K starting with the sport being no more than 12K
The Yaris hatch is closer to $11k actually, $10,950 to be exact. Keep in mind that at that "low" price the Yaris does not have:
1) A radio.
2) ABS/EBD.
3) Side or side curtain airbags.
4) Power windows, mirrors, or door locks.
5) Rear window wiper or rear defroster.
6) Mulit-function rear seat.

At 16k + TTL I could almost buy 2 Chevy Aveo's. I know there is probably a big difference in quality, but wouldn't someone who would buy such a small "econo" car, value $$$ more than "magic seats", body kit, and rear spoiler?
I REALLY doubt a Fit, loaded, would climb to $17 or $18K. For that price you can get a loaded up '06 Civic EX--(highest trim line except for the Si), it's bigger, sweet looking, futuristic dash/gauges, bigger/badder 140-horsepower engine (as opposed to the 109-hp Fit) and gets the same or better mileage (depending on your driving) than what the Fit numbers are saying. And the '06 Civic is so smooth and refined that it feels a lot more like an Accord, than the Civic we have known up till now.
If they charge much more than $15K for a loaded-up Fit, then I'll go to a new or used Civic or a used Toyota Camry or Acura. Honda needs to be careful that they don't scare potential Fit buyers into buying something else. It might be the nicest econo-box the U.S. has seen--but it's still an ECONO-BOX. If it's not priced appropriately, I'm not gonna buy it.
Honda has something really good going here with the Fit but they aren't without competition. If it looks overpriced, they'll lose sales. I love Hondas, am on my 4th one now, but Honda is not the only reliable brand out there. Toyota is just as reliable and I'm not above jumping ship if I feel the Fit is too pricey. Also, I can always get a slightly used Acura RSX S-type, for instance, for about the same price as a new Civic LX (middle of the road trimline). That would get me a lot of head-turning and a 200-horsepower engine to get around the pokey Fits or Yaris's that I am certain will be in my way.
No manufacturer is gonna make a penny if I buy a used car.
We'll see what Honda does. Whoever isn't happy with the Fit price has lots of other choices. I hope Honda remembers that.

and more potential price hike insight from Dick Colliver at NAIAS:
"It's a highly refined premium entry-level car featuring a number of firsts for the subcompact segment that will immediately make it a class leader."

But in Australia we pay a $hit load of taxes that aren't charged on cars in the US. The same cars as sold in Australia sell for almost exactly half the price in Japan. The difference isn't shipping cost but taxes, levies, charges, fees.

If the sport is anymore than 16k, that will be wayyyy too much.
