Actually cold isn't hard to deal with, except for exposed skin. If you layer and put on quality gear, you can stay quite cozy, but you have to watch out for fingers, toes, nose, etc. if you're out in -35 to -75 temperatures.
And cars need block heaters, or they don't even run. But other than that, it's not so bad.
It's harder to get comfortable in hot humid climates, 'cause you can't just peel off your skin to get cooler...

We Southerners just don't have the right gear for cold weather, which is why we complain so much about it...

When you have to live in it day to day.
It is -48 with the wind chill today. Fit wouldn't start as it wasn't plugged in.
My F250 wouldn't start either. The extension cord broke. I must have cracked it by stepping on it while shoveling the night before.
Boosted the F250 with my FJ40. Broke the wipers on the FJ40 and peeled one low tire from the rim.
Flooded the F250.........
Pulled out 6 of 10 spark plugs, replace with new ones.
Boost F250 again. F250 finally running but now I notice the battery has frozen and has cracked open.
Go to Walmart and buy another battery.
Can't get back into the F250! Locks are frozen from when I washed it 3 weeks ago. Damn! I don't have the remote with me.
Go back into walmart and buy anti-freeze for locks.
Piss around in the parking lot for nearly an hour and break the key in the lock.
Go back into Walmart and phone a buddy who gives me a lift home.
Get remote and key.
Go back to Walmart.
Open up F250.
Install new battery in F250.
Drive to work 4 hours late.
And my hands, feet and ears are frozen.
Yes, the cold is hard to deal with when you live in it.
Yeah, your right.
But in Saskatchewan its always blowing. A day without a 30mph wind is weird.

A lot of Canadians have dealt with this type of scenario at least once or twice a year - especially in the Western provinces. I like winter, but not for 6 months of the year with extreme conditions. I have lived with winter for 47 years...I am seriously considering moving to Mission Bay, San Diego...oh, my old bones.

you're joking, right?
Gather around me and hear what I say.To de-freeze your locks, there's no better way,
than to take the red tube from your warm W'40,
and spray in your lock. Then frozen they won't be!
House warm WD-40! (We don't need no stink'in Lock Anti-freeze! : )
Especially after washing your vehicle when the temp might drop! The difficult part is remembering to do it!
WD ~ water displacement
40 ~ fortieth formulation
Come-on, DISPLACE THAT WATER!

...and I ain't talk'in out-my-a$$.
Besides, my wife says I don't got one.

Craigster, The (20 year) Loxmyth
Its 10 degrees warmer (-27) where you are than where I am! And you live in Alaska.
Todays high will be -29, but the wind is picking up already. I am hoping to get the Fit running if it stays above -30.

It's all about having the right gear, and planning ahead.
I was going to ASSuME that you lived somewhere COLD at one time. This time I was right!

Nope.
If you go out without the right gear, you can freeze parts off, but if you put the right layers on, and take care of your machines, you can survive and even have fun in that kind of cold.
Been there, did that.
