Hmm, you did better than I did on the negotiating then, I think. Did you get your dealer to waive doc fee?

<--- honda dealership.

dont call the dealership greedy when they charge markup, unless you are willing to call yourself greedy for wanting a discount off msrp. it goes both ways.

vehicle price is dictated by the market, simple supply and demand.

there is nothing wrong with wanting to haggle and get some discount, just be realistic. must have the hot toy everyone wants for cheap? good luck. why should the dealer discount to you when there is someone else willing to pay more?

Never said the word "greedy", either way. I understand that dealers need to make a profit. I also understand that the Fit is a new product, and that demand may be high. I'm fine with MSRP - but I am unwilling to accept "market adjustment" markups or needless accessories. Understanding that the dealer needs to make a profit and the need to strike a fair deal does not equate to caving to a price that I, as a student about to graduate from college already in debt, cannot afford.

If you'd like to show me an invoice price that says MSRP is not a fair deal, please feel free.

Can someone speak definitively about the destination charge. I know what it is, and it is averaged for all the dealers, so a dealer 2 blocks from the factory pays the same amount as the one across the country, but where does the money go? Is that a charge the dealer actually has to pay the manufacturer? Or does all, or a percentage of it stay at the dealership?

my post wasnt directly targetted at you, but in general. i skimmed through the previous posts and the word greedy was mentioned numerous times.

i personally think 500-1000 above invoice is a fair deal, msrp deals are usually 1500 to 3500 more. however, the nature of car sales is not what is fair. i quote majority of my internet sales at invoice or 200-300 over depending on vehicle, yet i get many asking for even more discount, just earlier today, i got someone asking to get a odyssey exl for 29700 otd with more then 1000 dollar worth of accessories (invoice on the car is 28258, otd price at invoice with accessories is a tad under 32,000 dollars). so he basically wanted more then 2000 back off invoice, or 5000 off msrp.

anyways, back on subject. if you are willing to pay msrp, you dont have to worry, someone will be smart enough to earn your business.

the dealership pays the destination charge to the manufacturer. it's part of the cost for getting the vehicle.

if you want to haggle, dont haggle over a percentage of the destination charge.

So a fair (as in reasonable) deal would be:

Agreed price for vehicle+dest+tax+whatever registration/license fees your state requires.

Fair assumption?

depending on what state you are in, but for california.

it's the vehicle price, destination, these two charges should be together.

sales tax based on your residence.

license/reg based on your vehicle.

45 dollar dmv doc fee.

and a 8.75 tire fee.

What about the PDI fee? In Canada, they charge 1225$ freight and PDI on the Fit. About 450$ is for pre delivery inspection. That means some kid at 12$ per hour will take 30 minutes to wash and vacuum the car, and maybe an apprentice will take an hour to kick the tires and see if the radio works.

One of my buddy's is a licensed mechanic, bought a new car, haggled on the PDI, they said no. AS he's getting ready to leave the parking lot in his new car, he finds a few things that were missed on the PDI, but had been checked.

He left with some winter tires and rims for compensation.

Anyone having any luck with Fit prices in Florida? I'm in North Florida and will start shopping around at the various dealerships, but wanted to see if anyone else has pre-ordered or had any luck with pricing.

my dealership dont charge pdi fees, but i cant speak for other dealerships. a honda licensed tech spends 30 minutes to 1 hour on the car to pdi it, im sure they can do it faster, but they bill us for 1 hour worth of labor.

they check the fluid levels, enable the fuse boxes, fillup the tires, etc.

I'm in central Florida and put in an order, MSRP plus dealer prep, tax & tags -- no haggling allowed -- a little over 2 weeks ago at a local dealer. Car is due in no later than April 20. Hope you can find a Fit that isn't already taken. I'd call all your local dealers and find out when they're expecting models. If you want a chance to make up your mind by test driving, you may need to take a day off work to get in ahead of the crowd. The first shipments will only be 3-4 models. Everything coming in at my dealer will be the Sport with automatic.

I am not gong to be gouged when I know my Prizm will last me another 50000 miles easily. I won't buy if I cannot get a base MT & I won't pay over the MSRP. Of course, I don't think I should have to even pay destination: why should I pay Honda to deliver a car they have to transport here anyway to sell? (i know, I know--they all do it) But, I guess they'd just jack up the price $550 if it were included. Maybe I will wait for the rumored redesign in 2008 and then buy the '07 model from stock.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I don't believe anyone should pay MSRP for a b-segment car. And if you're paying over MSRP, well sorry but you're just plain dumb. Of course and understandably so, there are some who can't wait to get the Fit and are willing to pay MSRP. Nevertheless, I do not think there is much hype or demand for the Fit outside of this forum. This may change next week if Honda starts a huge marketing campaign and as gas prices raise. I still think that by May, you can acquire a Fit at invoice because its not the latest toy. The BMW M Coupe is the latest toy. The Fit is just the latest b-segment car in the long line of other b-segment cars coming to market soon.
