Agreed. On a side note, I think this is why satellite radio is a big deal in the US

Either that, or bring a nice CD selection. Or if your HU has USB capability, load your source up with equal parts upbeat and mellow music, and listen to them alternately. It's not always a good idea to listen to high-BPM songs all the time, because too much can make you feel tired.

I remember the gas "crisis" of the 70s. Many people died in car fires due to carrying gasoline in their cars. DON'T DO IT. The Fits tank is small, but her MPG is high [I get 36+ MPG (depending on terrain) on the highway adveraging 80 MPH with an automatic], so the miles per tank is about what a larger car with a larger tank gets. I have taken several long trips in my Fit. I'm very pleased with it's handling, comfort, etc. You should have no problems.

We bought ($3.99 at K-Mart) some mesh material that adheres to windows with suction cups. Helps when we go cross-country and drive when the sun is low in the sky. Can't tint the front windows in Illinois, and it's a greenhouse. Looks lame, but our Fit isn't for show, it's for travel. Folds into a nice little bag when not in use.

Time to run home and wash the Fit so it looks nice on Michigan Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Me and my friends did a cross country trip after graduating high school. We went from Kentucky to California and back. We traveled over 6200 miles in 12 days, and you did read that correctly. We averaged 30 to 44 miles a gallon over the trip. This was in a 2007 fit sport auto with four 18 year old guys, and the back was filled up to the roof of the car. Best time I think I have had in my life. Only spent $350 including gasoline. The entire trip only cost $500 dollars gas between the four of us.

thanks for all your help guys, i appreciate it very much. i'm getting ready to hit the road tomorrow, sorta nervous but excited at the same time. i've been reading the ECO-Fit portion of this forum and i've learned a few things. i tested those out last night when i went to my friend's house in roseville. even with stop 'n' go traffic for about 30 minutes, i averaged about 38 mpg by keeping the cruise control speed between 65-70mph. pretty much traveled 210 miles total with just a little more than half a tank left. i'm going to fill up later and see how much gas i really used and use those numbers.

i guess i won't be taking that gas can with me, my ipod has about 24GB of songs in it, and i bought that sun-shade thing that SportMTNavi mentioned, and i'm bringing my sleeping bag and pillow. i'll be using the pillow as an elbow rest. my makeshift center console.

once again, thanks guys. plus rep on all of you....... at least in these 24 hours. i gotta wait now

Correct... if you can get 300 miles out of a tank, you are easily in the average range for capability of most cars no matter tank size.

leg 1 of my trip from vallejo, ca to biloxi, mississippi

Hey guys, thanks again for all the hints and tips. I till have some rep points to give you guys but I don't have a laptop with me. I'm doing everthing on my blackberry well, I just finished my first leg out of for. I drove from vallejo to los angeles. I was surprise how well the fit did on gas mileage. I didn't do anything special, I just drove how I usually drive back home. My speed was usually between 70-75mph and still got about 38mpg. That's pretty awesome because my fit is loaded with my things. I've never paid much attention to mpg till this trip. Alright, I'm going to sleep. The fit is such a bug killer haha, my front is covered with bugs.

Heheheh. Bug splatter on windshields seems to be common over there bro. The last time I was in the US in 2005 (South Pasadena was our home base), we brought along my aunt's white 4Runner on a few trips - Napa Valley and SF - and its mug was always sticky with bug guts.

Hey guys, I finished my 2nd leg of four legs to mississippi. 2 leg was from LA to El Paso. It took me 12 hours!!! Once again, about 38-41 mpg on an MT Fit going 75mph about 85% of the time. I will be doing el paso to san antonio. This is the leg that I'm dreading the most, there nothing in west texas. I'm just going to take a bunch of breaks, today broke me with how long it took to get here. Tomorrow is going to kill me with boredom.

So what was the most interesting thing you saw in Texas? Going cross-country is great, isn't it?

Stay safe!

Cheers

Going cross country is fun only if you have a someone to talk to. I just finished my 3rd leg out of 4. I drove from el paso to san antonio. My god was it boring. I was calling everyone in my phone book just so I can have someone to talk to. I get on the internet on my phone, since some of the roads are so straight, I browse sometimes and I forget about the road. I know I'm an idiot for that but luckily, I was the only one on the road for the majority of the drive. I wish one of my brothers could've joined me but they all have school. It sucks being on the road on your own but it's nice to be alone sometimes, I get to pick my nose and fart whenever I want. Tomorrow morning is my 4th and last leg. it's going to be from san antonio to biloxi, MS, it should take about 9 hours but once again, I'm going to take a bunch of breaks. I just wanna get this trip over with so I can to it again in november, just going the opposite way. Oh yeah, BTW, I hate Texans who wear cowboy hats and think it's cool and homeless people trying to play the pity card with the family thing. I have no empathy for homeless people, anyone and everyone can work, either you work for yourself or work for someone. (Unless you're physically disabled) alright, sorry for the long and whiney post. I'm kind of in a bad mood, I think the drive is getting to me.

Take some music you like to listen to. It's rare to find a radio station that you like in the middle of nowhere.

My 08 Fit Sport has an "A-Sel" (Auto Select) feature on the radio which automatically programs all the preset buttons to the strongest stations in the area. When the A-Sel is pushed again the presets return to their original programed stations. Great feature IMHO!

Eh the Fit does just fine cross country, i did center of SC to Fairfield,CA and my only complaint was no cruise control but i did fine switching which foot was on the pedal . But i never had any "scares" of not finding a gas station. If it seemed it would be a while before i saw another gas station i would just stop.

p.s. Never fill up in Needle's,CA. Prices are hellacious. haha

Biloxi eh? Maybe goin to Keesler???

As does mine. The problem is that when you are between major markets, there just isn't much to listen to. I've been down roads where the only stations on the air were gospel and NPR. And I mean really bad gospel...

Personally, if I had the money right now I'd have satellite radio in the car. No more listening to commercials about how broadcast radio is 'free' and no more plugs for their 'HD' channels, and especially no more "station id's". One of the Louisville stations (107.7 WSFR) broadcasts a station ID between every song, reminding you that you're listening to the station that plays the most music with the least talk. Honestly, they spend more time talking about how little they talk that it's rare I listen to more than one song on that frequency before changing channels.

OT: Glad to here that the trip is going well. I find that having something to do on breaks also helps. I'm into Geocaching, so a trip like this would have waypoints along the way where I could stop and stretch and find a cache or two.

Yup, keesler afb but I'm not air force, I'm navy. I finally made it to keesler. This last leg from san anotnio to keesler was worse than west texas. There were so many "construction zones" and the speed limits were so slow. I hated it so much. At least I made it. I was is biloxi back in 05 but I left right before katrina raped the south. I already knew that I'd hate this place, being back for a second time just reconfirmed my hatred for biloxi. I can't wait to get my rims out of storage and put it on "Abigail" after I wash her up. It's going to look sweet. Next week, I'm going to blackout the headlight housing... Or whatever you call it. I can't wait till I graduate in november. Once again, thanks guys for the great advice. Once I get my computer up and running, I'm going to post some pictures of the trip.

Ah shitty ol' Keesler. I just graduated from tech school there back in August, now im stationed out here at Travis AFB..night and day or heaven and hell. haha depends how you want to look at it. But yeah Biloxi for some reason really didnt rebuild much after Katrina. Sure the casino's hopped all over that shit but a lot of the local shops and restraunts didnt. But you got New Orleans somewhat close if thats your kinda thing.

What in the world am I going to do in biloxi other than weather forecasting school? Last time I was here, I was only here for 4 months and I was still in "bootcamp" mode. All I did was go to school, workout, and eat at the galley. Hahaha, I can't believe bootcamp brainwashed me that much. Now I've tasted the "finer" things in life (Japan for 4 years) and now, this little po-dunk city is too boring for me. I don't gamble and I rarely drink, and that's pretty much all there is to do here. I'll just take it one day at a time.

Just found this thread so I am a little late. I have driven from coast to coast, north to south and all over this country. For long haul I get up early after a good night's sleep, eat and hit the road with a full tank of gas. I stop around noon for WPA (Water, pee and air) and fill the tank. If I am going to eat in a roadside stop I do it then. I try to carry a cooler with cold drinks and maybe some cold snacks if it is a long drive and I am grinding: a non-stop. On those I only stop for gas, usually at a truck stop where the gas is freshest, and pee while the car fills. Gas and pee are the only stops and done at the same place. I can go 16 hours or a little more if I have to. Gila, NM to Palo Alto is the longest single day I think I have done. I went through LA and then up I-5. That was just short of 1,000 miles and 16 hours. I did it in a '94 Accord. Good car, great mileage, high 30's.

I will be doing a run from Astoria, OR to Park City, UT and back in a couple of months. <900 miles, but not by much. It should be ~14 hours each way. I bring music I like. You can put a lot of MP3's on a CD, ~8 hours of music. A half dozen of the 8 hour CD's and what I can grab locally and I am cruisin'. This Fit is made for drivin'.

Oh, I always stop for gas too soon.
