I;ve gotten 78k miles from doing 5 cross country drives (as far as Kentucky and florida).
And if you check on a US map, that's not really south... :P
By southern route, I mean southern
There are many ways around from LAX to CHI, you really should check the 4 possible routes:
One goes straight south down through MO Through Texas and over on the I-40. then you have the 90 which branches into 80 and you have another banch choice to stay on 80 to go down I-5, or down I-15 through las vegas...
You should buy a paper map, from walmart/target/gas station. The Walmart US maps are the best choice, due to the fact they put placeholders on ALL their stores across the USA which is great for consistent supplies.
This way you can pick out places to stop at, you can see in bold lines where to avoid (They list projected projects that each state has applied for, or closed for construction and completion dates). Honestly, don't get hurt

Don't deviate from the highways once you hit utah. I've had 4 different GPS's go nuts there due to the rock walls..
oh wait, I'm thinking of Highway 70... hahahahhaha... so sad, but Utah and Colorado through highway 70 is breathtaking views non-stop, rain, dry, night, it's all the best views I've ever had....
Your lights hitting the rock walls that shine off and you see a train on the right of your car as you're traveling in and out of tunnels in the rock walls and you can hear the train and see the lights form the train hitting water falls from the highway.... so awesome.

Drop down south of I-80 in Utah. Unbelievable scenery for us flatlanders.
Cheers.
