first road trip, MPG report
Took the Fit to Michigan and back this weekend for a wedding, and got some impressive numbers... Most of the trip we used the cruise control, averaging 70-75 mph... half of the trip is mountains (NC to Kentucky) and almost all interstate... we don't drive crazy but we are definitely not lightfooted either, I like to accelerate as quickly as possible...
so here is what we got...
total trip was 1495 miles, including driving around town while we were there... these numbers are calculated by miles driven minus gas used... I didn't even check the car to see what it said I was getting... car was my wife and I and two kids, 10 and 7, plus luggage...
First tank (NC to Middletown OH, just north of Cincinnati) - 37.98 MPG
Second tank (Middletown to Mt Pleasant MI) - 38.5 MPG
Third tank (Mt Pleasant to almost Cincinnati) - 38.84 MPG
Fourth Tank (Cincinnati to Sevierville TN area) - 40.92 MPG
on the last tank we didn't want to take a chance running out of gas between Newport TN and home where there are spots of no phone reception, no gas stations, no exits, etc...
Overall I am very very impressed...

I'm currently on a road trip in PA (I live in Ohio) On the way out yesterday we got 38 mpg driving about 75mpg most of the way out. We are heading down southern PA tomorrow so I'm excited to see if I can get better. This was by fill up calc too. My dash read out was 42 mpg.
I think the EPA numbers are way off for this car. When I drive to work in the city during the week usually I see 33 mpg. Not anywhere close to 27 mpg the EPA says.
I'm auto btw.

Most excellent
I live in a semi "hilly" area and average 34 combined with my A/T. Anywhere I want to go around here vacation wise has some serious grades/mountain driving along the route so I don't expect I'll get much better than my daily.
Regarding the cars rated MPG it's about time the mfg's got real with the numbers instead of always coming in under what you hoped to get when you purchased the vehicle. Kudos to Honda for keeping it on the conservative side. As long as people do a little research they will see what the real averages are...

I just took my first major road trip, and was appalled at how off the dash gauge was. I don't understand why the AVG MPG gauge would be off by 10% as has been commonly reported here on the forums, but after doing my own calculations it was 10 mpg off for this road trip! The gauge read 43mpg when in fact I got 33mpg. In fact, the gauge read as high as 46mpg at one time.
I'm not complaining about the 33mpg, because it was an extremely hot and humid day and we had some luggage loaded......but 10mpg off? I don't get it.

You do know 10% off of 43 mpg is actually 38.7 mpg right?
43mpg x 10% = 4.3
43 - 4.3 = 38.7 mpg.
based on your calcs your Instant calc MID is off over 20%. Somethings not right.
If you did mile/gas used and got 33...something is way off with your gauge. My gauge is pretty close to 10% off all the time. Over 20% is crazy.

Yea...I'd be keeping an eye on your gauge. That is very odd it is that far off.
Keep checking it and post what it reads. Maybe the heat got to it that day...
I recently just drove to Las Vegas from San Diego. I averaged about 33MPG, which I feel is pretty decent.
The car had 4 people (including myself) luggage, a bunch of booze and soda. We drove there with the AC on the entire way, and didn't do all that bad.
She sure struggled going up those hills in San Bernadino though... poor Fit!

Just came home yesterday from a road trip, upstate New York to Glacier Nat'l Park in northwest Montana and return.
Trip totalled 6000+ miles, 65-75, with a/c and without, avg FE was 40.71
I'm happy with those numbers.
PS: Oh yeah, Glacier was spectacular!

We went to St. Louis and back yesterday (400 miles or so) and got 37mpg. A/C on, about 65 mph. That's typical for us in windy conditions. Better in no wind.
You're getting great gas mileage. With gas going up again, those Fits are going to be moving off dealers' lots.
Cheers.
