considering a Fit

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here.

My 1996 Civic was recently totaled in a five car wreck (not my fault at least) and now I need another car so I've been looking into a Fit. I'm wondering what the key difference are between the 2007, 2008 and 2009. As far as I have read on Edmunds, the 2009 is a little big bigger and has more HP than the 2008 and as I gather, the 2007 was first generation and then the '08 started the second, right?

I searched old threads and didn't find anything about this but sorry if it's already been addressed.

Thanks in advance, I'm really hoping to get a Fit soon.

actualy the 2009 started the 2nd gen... the 2nd gen has a bit more power, but from what i have hear its more sluggish. my advice would be test drive both and decide what one you liek best, you will probably get very Biased opinions on here as the 1st gen people (like me) think its better and the 2nd gen ppl think the 2nd gen is better... the only reason i would go for a '09 is VSA but that is only available with the sat. nav. for like 2 grand more... but honestly 1st or 2nd gen you can't go wrong... its just a great car! and welcome to fitfreak!

I was in the same boat as you, I chose a 2008 Fit sport with a 5 spd MT. You should test drive both to see what you like. The older model Fit (GD3) is from 01-08 so the 07-08 is actually not the first years of it. The 2009 (GE8) Fit is new. The 2009 Fit has more HP, about the same amount of torque but a little bit heavier, but geared a little bit better. The 2009 does have more options and they have updated some stuff. I think the GD3 gets better mpg because it is lighter and geared differently. Hope that helps.

I recently bought a 2009 Sport with A/T (no Nav). This is a great car. I feel like it has plenty of pep and like some have said it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

I like the newer model because it is a little bigger and it will not get an upchange for at least 5 or 6 years, maybe longer.

I have had 9 Hondas and this is the best yet. Nimble, economical, fun, great utility and, did I say FUN. The new cars are not that much more than a used 07/08. Either way, you can't beat a Fit. The others in this class don't make the role call.

2009 has an armrest (w/ auto trans), map lights, dead pedal. previous version doesnt.

2009 has a slight increase in hp.

2009 doesnt have those giant headrests which, in the previous version, had to be removed to put the back seats down.

honda addressed the most common complaints of the old fit when designing the new fit.

new or old, most people seem happy with their fit.

Yeah none of us on here could say anything bad about either car... i mean its a Honda.... its not gonna win any drag races (except maybe against a smart car) but you will have tons of fun driving it, especially on the twisties! and it will run forever. there really is no comprable car in this class, just look at the reviews of either generation. its on top of everyones list... sorry to post again just cant stop praising the car! lol

FYI, the 2009 Manual has a driver side arm-rest.

Take a look at the press, global Fit/Jazz sales, read the majority of the threads here which are positive, all pretty good indicators about the Fit and Honda in general. Is the car perfect, nope, show me one that is, especially for <$20k. It's a great car imho, and is exactly what I was looking for.

One other good reason to stay with a Honda, no Fits there yet, but being that every other Honda is represented I expect there to be some with time:

Good luck with your decision...

Here's a little tip: Like other Hondas, it's a little more specific to refer to "generations" of them by their chassis codes. Sounds a mite geeky at first, but it makes things a little easier, especially if you're hunting for aftermarket parts specific to a certain generation of Honda.

Like Firebat and wil524 said, the GDs (first-generation Fits/Jazzes) were made worldwide from 2001-2008, but were offered in the US only from 2007 -2008 in GD3 form. The GEs (second-generation) are what you'll find in dealers brand-new now, as the GE8.

Key differences? Well, interior space, seat comfort and visibility of the GE Fits are a little improved over the GDs. There's roughly a 10HP bump on the 1.5L engines on the newer cars...not that you'll notice it. I remember Honda Japan being a little less optimistic with the fuel economy figures of the newer cars compared to the GD Fits, but the difference is negligible at best and the fact is that the Fit was built as a fuel-miser.

They say Honda improved the ride comfort of the GE8s over the GD3s but having test-driven both, personally I don't think there's a difference. Both cars ride rather firmly.

From a financial standpoint, the new 09 Fits don't cost much more than the used 07-08 Fits. The older models have retained a very high value while many of the 09s are currently selling for below MSRP (probably not for long, though). IMO, the used GD3s are still selling for ridiculous amounts, as if they had just been driven off the lot and driven back on. It may make more sense to buy a new to have it retain value longer.

edit: Forgot to mention that you get a tax break if you buy a new car before Dec. 31 2009. That's a couple hundred dollars in savings.

ive had a few women come up to me and tell me how much they like the way the car looks. all of them were old. lol.

as far as power.... pfft. power shmower. i'll happily save the money on gas.

but you're right. honda seems to want to direct the car toward a younger demo, but i think it's an older crowd that's buying.

btw, i've observed people just stopping and looking at the car. i think people think it's a hybrid or something not-quite-normal. one guy asked me if it had 3 cylinders.
i told him, "yeah, and i wear a bike helmet when i ride it."

also keep in mind the vast majority of those posts are for the GDs.

i dont say that to be critical, but it's important to know which car is being discussed in those posts.

I feel the same exact way! I wouldn't mind a faster car like a S2k or Civic Si.

Every single girl thinks my car is CUTE! WTFFF?! My car isn't supposed to come off cute...
