Floor Mat Fiasco

My wife's Fit is the second Honda we've owned and the first we've purchased new from a dealer.

Aside form the usual dealership annoyances (sales pitches for extended warranties, rust proofing, typical hard sell tactics) it wasn't a terrible experience.

One minor annoyance was that floor mats weren't standard. Oh well. We have kids so we forked out the $80 or so for them. When we went to pick up the new car our salesman said that he just had to install the floor mats and then it was ours.

We loved the car, but both myself and my wife were getting a bit annoyed with the sliding mats, as both the floor itself and the mats are plastic, and they slid all over the place. Having had my Civic recalled for this very issue, I figured there must be something the dealership could do to fix this so told my wife to have them look at that at that when she went in for the first oil change.

Alas, we didn't make it to that point. When trying to park in a parking garage, the mat slipped, my wifes foot ended up hitting the gas, and caused a $3000 hole in our front bumper assembly.

*sigh*

So we took it to the dealership to get an estimate and while I was there I talked to the repair center about this issue...specifically asking them if there was supposed to be some sort of restraining system for the mats.

The service people were very helpful but then had to spend about an hour with managers asking about the issue before they finally came back to me "yes, there is a restraining system and we'll install this for you for free right now!"

A dealership doing something for free? Well, that raised suspicions.

So, I called Honda directly and asked them about this. They gave me the usual spiel that Honda has nothing to do with any of their dealerships and any problems I may have I'd have to take up with the dealership.

However, I did finally get them to confirm that floor mats, as shipped to the dealerships, come WITH the mounting kit and instructions.

Aha! So I called the dealership back and talked to a manager who immediately gave me the information for their insurance company. He wouldn't admit to negligence outright, but seemed to admit that something was amis.

Long story short, no one took any bit of responsibility for any of this. Our insurance company fought theirs to no real resolve.

YES, accidents happen, and we were more than willing to pay the deductibles/whatever for our part, but when Honda doesn't take any responsibility for its dealerships, who, in turn, take no responsibility for improperly installing official Honda parts that a) were upsold to us and that we paid for and b) were partially the cause of a $3000 accident, well, it doesn't make me appreciate the Honda company very much.

Anyways, that's my rant. Still love the fit. But if you own one, be SURE to get those floor mats fixed if your dealership was as incompetent as ours.

Which mats? The ones we have are the plastic tray-like ones. And the bottom of the driver's side floor is also plastic. It was impossible to keep ours in one spot for any amount of time.

wow that is awful. im sorry to hear that happened.

that is bs though i'm sorry. the dealership improperly installed your equipment and should take responsibility for what happened. yes maybe you could have caught the problem if you had known about it, but that's not your fault. they installed it for you and should have installed them, not just threw them down to their corresponding positions. LAZY! dealerships...

They installed mine. It took them over an hour to slit 6 holes (2 per mat excluding the driver side rear mat which apparently doesn't have any. I would have installed them myself if they were going to take that long.

I don't know how the mat could have affected your foot being on the brake or not because I don't rely on my heel to make sure the brake pedal is depressed--but thats unfortunate that much damage was caused by something that could have been completely avoided if they were installed properly in the first place.

Talk about lazy...

Yeah I have the all-weather floor mats. I just installed my hooks just in case though

I hope you get this resolved quickly, I feel it is the dealerships responsibility

I ordered the cargo cover, all weather floor mats and the tail exhaust finisher. My dealership installed them all without any problems and did not charge me a dime for doing the installs. Yes, those mats are suppose to be secured with hooks that keep them from moving out of place. The dealership was negligent in not installing them correctly and should be responsible for some of the damage to your car.

Cat...maybe you already paid an installation fee when you purchased the mats?? I don't know how it is in the USA, but here in Canada it's almost a 40$ difference to buy the mats installed as an option...vs. buying the mats "uninstalled". The price is already built in at our dealerships.

Our all-weather mats are 178.00!! but 'only' 140.00.90 uninstalled as shown here on the ShopHonda365 website.

PRODUCT OF HONDA CANADA - 2009 FIT ALL WEATHER FLOOR MATS #08P13-TK6-310

Prices are up front online here but I haven't seen similar on the USA Honda website...maybe individual dealers web pages have the price breakdown.(?)

For the record, there was never any resolution. Honda had no interest in taking any responsibility. The dealership fought our insurance company. I don't think my insurance company tried very hard as we lost in arbitration.

Granted, I'm not shocked. I've never liked car dealerships and never really have trusted them*. So, this certainly dosen't change my opinion of them...just solidifies it even more.

* the one exception was when we bought a Forrester. The Subaru dealership we went with gave us a quote via email that beat the rest. They didn't push a single add-on when we went to purchase, either. Great dealership.

I'm sorry there was no resolution, but keep in mind that no car company is about to take fault for something like that unless it's a design flaw. Your problem was improper installation--f*ck them for not taking 2 MINUTES a mat because thats how long it really takes. I had to replace my clips because of people putting there feet on them they had gotten bent down and lost effectiveness--got the parts replaced for free and installed them. I wonder why it took them so long to install mine on delivery.

This is how bloody simple it is: push in the perforated spots in the carpet for the hooks (like little upside down perforated U's), slit the insulator with an exacto in that same U shape, tuck the flap you just cut inside towards the floorpan, stick the plastic clip in and push in the center plastic piece which locks it in place. Repeat for each mat.

MATS ANCHORED!

replacement floormat Hooks

Tek, who did you contact to get the replacement floor mat hooks?

My dumb*ss managed to throw them away and now my floor mat is constantly sliding around. It's not too bad, but it tends to slide forward and rotate so that it can interfere with the clutch pedal if I let it go to far. Online, I can only seem to find the whole set of mats, which is a bit of overkill since I only need the hooks. did you get them from the dealer?

Yeah the dealer had tons spare from people who didn't want the hooks installed--I did some researching for you and came up completely dry, sorry dude.

Your best bet is to call around and try to find a dealer with spare clips that they will give you for free or uber-cheap at least.

I bought hooks not knowing that the mats I bought from eBay already had them. They were about $2-3 each.

Be specific, though, since the hooks for the rear mat are different.

I've had the all-season rubber mats since I got the car in October 2008. I had them included with my new car because I had to wait quite a while for delivery from Japan. I always hated how the front driver's side mat would slide around under the pedals and I would always have to pull it back.

So yesterday when I was looking at that flat tire pump thing, I found a little baggie with two black plastic clips in it and instructions (in French!) on how to install them so that mat stays in place! Why the heck didn't the dealership tell me that there were clips for the mats or better yet, why not install them for me since they put the mats inside the car when I picked it up! All this time I've been complaining about the mat moving around with no idea that it was actually supposed to be held in place with clips. So Fit owners with these rubber mats, make sure you get those clips installed ASAP if you weren't aware of them, like I was! Does anyone know where the English instructions are?

That's perfect. Thanks for posting that. I'm going to install that mat tomorrow. Funny though, I've never noticed any 'slits' in the hard rubber part or 'recesses' in the carpet and I've cleaned the interior a few times now. I'll have to double check tomorrow.
