The skid shield is the black cone in the center of the rear of the car (circled in magenta):


I'm planning to take pictures as I go... may even mount one hitch, then take it off and mount the other, just to get a definite idea of exactly how they compare to each other, with regards to clearance.

 

So what is the skid shield protecting??? I took a look under my car last night (without removing the shield) and didn't really understand its purpose.

 

It's to keep you from bottoming out and damaging the fuel lines or gas tank while backing up. In theory, if it scrapes first (making an awful, nasty noise), then you'll stop backing up, and avoid the damage.

 

Neat man! Does that rack system go in and out easily?

What brand hitch is it?

Hmmm... I might need to trim the u-bolt on mine, so it doesn't stick down so far below the rest of the hitch.

How far would you say it is from the retaining pin hole to the outer edge of the bumper? I'm trying to get an idea of how close my hitch mounted bike rack is going to be to the bumper.

 

All you need now is one of those propeller thingies for the receiver, and you could tell all the people who ask if it's a hybrid that it is prop driven.

Seriously, that is huge. Despite the warranty police, it would be great to be able to trailer the bike to track days. Last time I went was from LA to Laguna Seca. I had to go to work the next day, so after blasting around the track all day, I rode back, and hit snow on the Grapevine. Man that was a cold, tired, misearable ride.

 

where did you get this setup? i need a better way to transport my bike than just throwing it in the back...

I ordered my Curt Hitch from etrailer.com.

It arrived two days ago.

I timed it - it took me 13 minutes to install. If I had know what I'm about to share, I could have done it in 5 minutes!!!

1. Remove that triangular cone-shaped thingy that hangs down under the back of your Fit. You could to this ahead of time, if you have one on order. There are three 12mm bolts to remove.

2. Since I was doing this myself, and without the assistance of someone else, I wasn't able to follow the instructions and install the loop connector first as I wasn't able to articulate that - so I installed one of the rear bolts first, just a few threads in, 3 or 4 turns.

3. I installed the other rear bolt loosly, as well.

4. I connected the loop connector to the tow hook.

5. I gradually tightened each of the rear bolts, 13mm, and the two nuts on the loop connector, 14mm. (Why aren't all these the same?!?!?!?) Until they were tightened to the appropriate torque listed in the instructions.

Like I said, total time - 13 minutes, including the time to find the proper size wrenches and removing the "thingy" under the back.

Simple!!!!

I have the ETS x-30 and I'd also like to know where you got this Thule rack for the interior. Was it originally a roof mounted system? With the interior of the fit I wasn't sure how I was going to mount quick realease supports, but your set up is exactly what I am looking for.

very clever... since im poor and i like to build things... im going to be making my own interior rack for a single bike. plans and pictures to come.

 

I just used to standard Thule roof tray from my old car and screwed it to a 2x4 and painted it black. I like the idea of locking the bike inside via the locking tray. The only problem so far is the sand from the rear tire falls off into the rear cup holder. So now I keep a stiff brush in the car and scrub off the loose dirt before loading up the bike. I also have a hitch on and a bike rack for two bikes so I can transport up to 3 bikes. I still can put three people in the car with the right back seat up and one bike in the back. The FIT is so cool.
