Got To The Rev Limiter...

well i posted the speed pic and just now b4 getting home i hit the rev limiter...i would say its just about b4 the 7 grand mark...maybe 6800 RPM, but i hit it...damn i feel bad that i am beating my car like this, but i just cant help it...i love revving an engine but for that little 1.5 liter i just have to test it out...call me crazy or idiotic as plus c would say. when i got close to 7 grand it bounced so thats why i think its 6800 RPM...anybody on the same boat as me let me know... if not I will keep on giving feedback about the performance of this car

I'm not going to call you crazy or stupid, because that would make me crazy and stupid, too. That's why my motorcycle is only a 400, and my car will be the weazy little 109 hp Fit with the stir-stick. I find it much more fun to use all the potential of a little motor, than just idle a big engine down the street. By the time the Porsche/Ferrari, et al drivers get to second gear, they are letting off and checking their rearviews for flashing lights. With little cars/bikes you can have more fun and keep your license, all without killing yourself or anyone else.

I'm not so sure I will be thrashing it quite so hard as you are this early in it's life, though. Have fun, be safe, keep the maintenance up.

I think it is great that you are having fun with your car and doing things that others would like to, but don't have the balls to do. Keep having fun with your new car and keep letting everyone know what they are missing out on.

There's nothing wrong with hitting the rev limiter once in awhile so long as you're out of the break-in period.

In fact, it's good to redline your car every so often to blow the cobwebs out. You can get carbon build-up if you never wring it out.

Now, I would certainly not advise just bouncing off the thing all the time, for a number of reasons. You don't have the cooling capacity to do that, or likely the oil circulation capacity either.

If you intend to spend a lot of time driving you car very hard, there are some simple things you can do to prolong engine life. One would definitely be an aftermarket oil cooler (and tranny fluid cooler, if you have an A/T). Another would be a baffled oil pan if the Fit doesn't already have one (and if it doesn't, Spoon probably makes one).

Anyone know if there's any truth to the whole "hose clamp on the oil filter" thing?

Upgraded radiator can't hurt either, but I don't know how much overcapacity the Fit's cooling system has, could be that it just doesn't need it.

Nice Paulo.

I've actually never hit my absolute rev-limiter, but you know, VTECs are made to be revved high considering the VTEC kicks in quite late.

So no harm done

I figured it would be only about 400 RPM over redline like normal Hondas...

Speaking of VTEC. You guys ever wonder if the VTEC in the FIT is for gas mileage, power, or both? I'm touching on this because I just got back from the Honda Training Center and the instructor touched on the topic for me. For example, the 98-2002 Accords have VTEC. But their VTEC is used to promote swirl and vaporization in the combustion chamber. The valve timing is set to open only one intake valve, then when VTEC turns on, both intake valves open but not at the same time. They open one after another. When I asked why, he said to promote swirl and vaporization in the combustion chamber. When I tried to go in depth, he stated that they do this because someone is very very smart when it comes to valve timing.

So anyways, as for the VTEC kick, can you really feel it? I really haven't had the chance to put a FIT through the paces yet, hopefully next week.

i have hit it once, there's really no power way up there past redline so there's no good reason to keep the revs up there often. I hit the rev-limiter in 2nd and 3rd in my M3 at least once a month just because it hits it quickly.

In my old GSR, the rev-limiter actually felt sorta uncomfortable. It just made so much power up top that you didn't notice the fact that you were about to hit it, then it would cut-out hard and slam the front end down.

Hit it all you want, all day long...it will still outlive your children. Honda motors are wonderful (assuming you keep it maintained).

i put my car through several WOT each day, as long as it's been warmed up and oil is flowing, no problem.

Just my opinion, but I don't think the Fit was "intended" to be raced.

Driving to redline doesnt mean racing. I do that a couple times a day just driving to/from work and I dont "race".

I would feel more comfortable with synthetic oil if I hit the redline often, especially since the Fit used 5w-20 oil.

I realized that I have 1200 miles already, so I put it in S and stomped on the gas. I believe that it shifted at redline before I tapped the paddle. *shrug* I doubt the Fit's engine is generating all that much heat (say, even relative to my mediocre VR6 Jetta...) even at redline.
