Exclamation Helicopter effect...

Anybody drive over 45mph with just the rear windows down? Holy crap, what a noise! I was doing around 75mph when I started rolling down just my rear windows and the noise was so deafening, my eardrums hurt afterwards.

This is common on lots of newer cars. It's the price of better aerodynamics...the airflow is attached to the body better, rather than being turbulent.

It happens in my Ford Focus wagon too. I heard somebody on Car Talk mentioning that it's even noted in the owner's manual of their Jeep.

Solution...open the other windows just a bit. This changes the dynamics of the airflow.

That's happened on every vehicle I've owned in the last 10 years, from trucks to minivans to cars.

The same thing happens with my Civic (in sig below). Just open the front windows a bit and it'll stop.

Interior buffeting in newer cars is very common - my CRV will blow your ears out if you're not careful!

My '00 Jetta does too if I open the moonroof, so I crack the rear windows 1/2 inch to kill the whump whump whump...

Helicopter effect happens in my old Pilot, as well as every car I've ever been in. Maybe you just got lucky with previous vehicles?

The same thing would happen in my GTI and Jetta with the sunroof open at lower speeds.

I am saddened by this news. With no vent windows, and no moon/sunroof to tilt up for better airflow, what am I going to do? Mugen vent visors just went to the top of my accessory list.

Isn't that normal? Roll down the rear window only and you'll get that effect?

Yes it's true!!! Any car will do this.
By opening the other helps balance the airflow traffic inside the vehicle,.therefore less wind noise and drag for the auto.Balance is what it boils down to.

Cheers!!
