conveyance fee?? how much is too much?

hey all, just put a refundable deposit down on a fit sport auto and rolled into the final price is a $295 "conveyance fee"... is this a normal amount or normal at all? here's the number breakdown...
sport auto including delivery - $16520
massachusetts sales tax - $826
plates (i think) - $86
total selling price - $17734

so if you total up the first 3 numbers you get $17,432
which leaves a $388 difference... this is where the "conveyance fee plus tax" comes in i guess... i don't know i guess it seemed like another tack on charge but it could just be my ignorance... thought i'd check in with you guys to see what others have paid and if i should try and shop around for cheaper conveyance fees...
thanks.
HONK!

Is that fee a dealer processing charge? If so it sounds about right for some states. I sell Hondas in Maryland and we can only charge up to $100. However I have heard of dealers in Virginia charging $300-$400 for dealer prcessing.

yeah i believe it's for the paper work and processing... i'm doing a little research online and i'm finding that $295 seems like a lot... i might have to go and get my deposit back of try and negotiate the fee amount. thanks for the response.

Dealer processing is a joke. It's just another cash grab from the dealers. I personally have a policy of never shopping with any dealer that charge those fees.

Well, here in Mass the dealer will go to the RMV and transfer your old plates for you. You drive in with your old car and drive away with new plates, inspection sticker and you're ready to roll. No reason to go the RMV again. Personally, I think that that is worth something.

I think it is ridiculus to pay $3.00/ gallon for gas, but I dont have a choice.
The dealer processing fee at least in our case is to pay the salary of our accounting office folks. We do all of your tag and title work so they make sure car is taged and titled properly and your taxes are paid. They also make sure that your trade gets paid off so that you dont have a late fee on your credit. But the best part about America is that have freedom of choice.

Get used to it. It's not coming down anytime soon. I just got back from the Netherlands and the price of a gallon of gas is ~$7.00 US. It's a world market for oil. How can you think it's ridiculus for $3.00 a gallon? It is what it is and you'll pay it because you want to drive a car.

just talked with the connecticut dealer that i had my refundable deposit with... but before i called them i called the other massachusetts dealer just to see what their "conveyance" fee was... as soon as i said the word "conveyance" they knew i was talking about the connecticut dealer... must be a known trait of their business practice.. .anyhow i asked for my deposit back over the phone... i could tell he was pissed but whatever...so yeah anyhow the mass dealer said that their fee was $165 compared to the others of $299... the mass dealer also said that their "plates" fee was $5 compared to the CT dealer of $86... so there it is a difference in $225.75 including tax... that's enough of a difference for me to buy elsewhere.

Actually, it was $6.82 a US gallon. What I saw was 1.41 Euro per liter. There are 3.79 liters in a US gallon and currently the dollar is $0.79 per Euro. Diesel there is $1.32 a liter which is $5.03 a US gallon.

Another thing to note is that "regular" gas is Euro95 and "premium" gas is Euro98 octane. So you are paying a bit more for that. But nonetheless, that is all you can get there.

I was making a point and The taxes that are added to the price of Gas in Europe are astronomical! Since I was paying $.97/gallon 7-8 years ago for premium I think I have the right to believe that $3.00/ gallon is ridiculous.
My point was that most dealerships in my area have a processing fee and it is a valid charge. People pay it because they want the car. So at least you understand my point.

Conveyance Fee sounds like they're trying to tack on an extra destination fee. The dealer I'm buying from tacks on a flat $75 fee to cover documentation and whatever else - they're just over the RI border from Worcester.

Just out of curiousity... you're not a MB employee, are you? I have no idea what else is in ELM besides MB/PB

I'm not sure how RON and (MON+RON)/2 compare exactly, but their 95/98 octane wouldn't be equivalent to a 95/98 octane gas in the US.

Either way, US gas prices are a steal compared to the EU and most other places in the world. I would love to see a displacement tax implemented here like there is in the EU.

Ron 95 in Europe is rougly Equiv to 87 Octane in North America, and Ron 98 is approx 90 Octane here.

They just pay more for the same grade.

I have to agree. I'm lucky that in Oregon the doc fee is limited to $50, so at least they can't steal your money that way. With no regulation, some dealers charge $500+ for their doc fees.

$295 dealer fee isn't actually bad. Most dealers in South FL charge $399 to $499 dealer fee up front.
